Oxidation Question

Alright.. so last summer I purchased a 2006 Grand Prix. It's Metallic Silver, it was used as a demo car so I got a good deal on it.

The paint looked fairly new, yet I doubt the dealership had done anything to it but wash it from time to time. I got it and gave it a good cleaning, and it looked pretty good to me... Now, over last winter it's hard to keep the car clean with a good waxing up here in Minnesota (I swear I'll lose my hands from drying the car in the winter weather) usually was 'em in the self was buildings.

ANYWAY... I still thought the car had looked pretty new this spring.. my girlfriends dad had hit the rear wheel well area on the passenger side while backing out one morning. After it had gotten fixed I can now really tell how aged the rest of the paint is.. I've tried quite a bit to get the rest of the car to look closer to that paint, with little to no luck. I can get pictures tomorrow if needed, was going to wash it tomorrow morning. I don't really have access to any of the good products off the internet, I usually use "meguiars" or "mother's" cleaning products from the local pepboys, along with turtlewax pads...

Is the paint just aged and dulled or is it just oxidized to a point where I can't do it myself with what I have? (Sorry about no pics yet). Up close you can barely tell, but from afar it's incredibly visible, and it bugs me due to how much better it looks in that area, and that you can tell it had been worked on.

I recently have taken a photo... sorry it's not a sunny day, won't be sunny for a few days yet around here so.. You can still see what I'm talking about, is it just the way the painted like you say?... or is my paint not up to par clarity wise? It's the rear half of the car that had gotten painted, the rear door was "blended"...

See.. the thing is, when it's sunny, that part of the car is just so GLOSSY and reflective.. just seems like I'm maintaining the rest of the cars paint poorly.

Welcome dac.

There could be so many variations on the look of your car that makes you think that. Especially silver.

Oxidation--slight, but any cleaner wax will bring an '06 back.

Scratches or swirls or neglected paint--common, any filling wax will show you a vast improvement. Temporary, but will show you the possibilities.

Different paint color or flake size or flake lay down-- very common for silver. No much you can do but respray.

I would start with cleaner wax, that will show you the outcome of a polish and the look to be expected. After that then i would look at the paint itself.

Am I seeing a reflection of the bush in the rear door (the back 3/4 is much darker) or is the paint that different?

Yeah.. the back half was the half that my girlfriends dad dented and scratched like no other.. so they repainted above the wheel well and the side of the bumber, and blended the rear door to match it.

So the front passenger door and the front fender are still the stock paint, but I'm having trouble figuring out if the original paint is different than the new paint, or if there is some sort of aging or oxidation of some sort on the original paint that's making the old paint less glossy?

Here... sun poked out somewhat for a few minutes, little bit easier to notice it, sorry about the angle it's a little harder to pinpoint it when it's dark.
