Oxidation, Or?

This spot on the hood started to develop about a month ago. Noticed it one day after washing the truck. Now, it seems the hip and back of the hood is doing the same thing. I realize my sealant (PB EX with Carn.) is about the end of its rein, but the truck still beads decent. Is this an oxidation issue, or something else? I'm 95% sure the hood has been repainted, and am unsure how much they removed during the wetsanding process. There are a couple burns from when they buffed the passenger side that was painted as a blend, so I'm pretty weary.

Pictures (yes, it's been a week or so since I washed it, terrible dust at work, and the blobs are from dust sticking to the windshield washer fluid since one squirter is broke and going in the wrong direction )

That looks like the start of clear coat failure. I started a thread about this last week.

The tell tale signs are it starts to look cloudy and that seems to be the case with yours.

Not much can be done about it, other than repainting.

I would try lightly polishing it and see if it clears up. It could be oxidation from a cheaper clear coat used during a repaint or it could be the beginning of clear coat failure.

Will do Todd, the truck is due for a full detail tomorrow (first time in months I've been scheduled a Saturday off ). Probably eventually get the entire truck repainted due to some shoddy bodywork previously, but hopefully this can get me through.

Not near as bad as the Nissan I'm dealing with. Can you get it to clear up at all?

Yes, cleared up quite well actually; was a surprise to me.

SSR1 on LC CCS Blue , followed with 2 coats of Poorboy's EX Sealant with Carnauba (more or less done to ensure full coverage) and 1 coat of PB Natty's Red.

EDIT: I want to say, the more I use it, the more I have come to love PB SSR1. I rarely reach for the SSR2.5 anymore, as I've gotten it to get out some decent swirls and other defects. Even used it on a single stage white Ford and it removed the serious chalkiness without gumming up.

That looks so much better! A friend of mine has a Dodge Caravan and the hood does the same thing. It becomes cloudy over time and a light polish clears it right up. It has been doing this for several years. Once polished it looks fine. The majority of the fading/clouding seams to be centered over the motor.

He recently applied Opti-Coat 2.0 to see if that will have any effect on the problem.

*sigh*

Well, it seems as if it is clearcoat failure. Truck was due for its bi-weekly wash, and after all was said and done the spot is coming back two weeks after the detail. Oh well, only thing to do is repaint in my future when I get back North and me and my father can do it right. Nothing to get mad about, ya win some, ya loose some.

Sorry to hear it :(

Sorry about that!

I have a couple customers cars that are in that stage of clearcoat failure. The only permanant fix is a repaint usually even if it polishes out well.

When ever I see that couldiness in clearcoat I always warn my customers that is probably the beginning of the end.

It's a pretty common thing down here. About 50% of the cars around here are running around with messed up clearcoat. I just happened to get a vehicle with a sketchy repaint job.
