Oxidation? Need Suggestions

Since this is my first post, I'll introduce myself:

My name is David and I have been browsing these forums for some time now, soaking up all car-care intellect that is abundant here. I drive a Subaru and enjoy track days, auto-x, and good 'ol fashioned safe-driving fun. I am glad to have joined such a great community, and wish I would have done it sooner.

Now onto my problem:

After thoroughly searching the archives, I was unable to determine how to correct the problem in my paint.

Here is a close up photograph of a particular problem area (as there are also others, i.e. - side of car and trunk):

It may be hard to see, so I adjusted the levels to better distinguish the problem area:

Ignore the area above the center of the rear window. That is just dirt (it rained a few days ago).

If you look at specifically the area right above the window separation, you'll see what looks like a bunch of dirty fingerprints. But this is what it looks like after washing, claying, and waxing. I first noticed it months ago, after each wash and detail.

The rear quarter panels and doors were painted last year after some custom modification was done to allow larger tire sizes. The painting was done by Finishing Touch in Fountain Hills, AZ (http://www.finishingtouchaz.com). Prior to that, the car was in and out of the garage for a period of almost a year, during construction, and was in southern Arizona weather. The areas affected by this include the places that Finishing Touch painted, but also areas that have not been modified from the factory, such as the side sills, front doors, and rear trunk and spoiler.

I'm not sure if this is oxidation or possible overspray. Also, I use Zaino products on my cars.

Any help or recommendations on what to do to remove this is greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you for letting me be apart of the forum.

Regards,

David

David,

Welcome :wavey

I can tell you that it's not oxidation and it's most likely not overspray since you state you have been using a clay bar.

I believe this is a paint issue, under the clear most likely. Take it back to the paint shop and have them look at it. It's almost as if the paint was sprayed in an uneven manner.

Good luck,

Anthony

That's what I thought, but the areas in which they did not paint are the problematic areas. The areas that they painted, are fine. So the front fenders, rear doors, quarter panels, hood, and door jams are perfect and definately exceed the quality of the oem subaru paint job by far. But the places in which the paint remains oem, is where this type of 'uneveness' is found.

Got ya, I misread the post.

Many times an OEM metallic paint job can have that splotchy uneven look but there is nothing wrong with the clear coat itself. My Ford has that splotchy look to it on the hood but not anywhere else....it's as if the sprayers ran out of flake and were sputtin just a bit when my hood got painted.

You shouldn't have any problems with the paint as long as the clear coat is good.

I'll get some pictures of the sides after I wash the car tomorrow. At the right angle in direct sunlight, it is really evident. It was nothing like that when I initially bought the car.

Sorry for delay. Busy with school.

Here are some pictures of a portion of the spoilers after a wash. Again, the photos are adjusted to better distinguish the problem. The clearcoat looks to be in perfect condition throughout. Would the sun be able to cause nonuniform fading like this?

I've pretty much considered this a lost cause. But I figured I would keep this posted on the slight chance that there might be a solution, besides completely repainting the vehicle, which I might have to do this summer.

My Expedition is the same way. Its all under the clear coat, and the two of us are screwed. Well, me in particular as its factory paint, and 6 yrs old......You on the other hand have some recourse.....

Well this is factory paint as well, but this is only 3 years old.
