Orbital

I am sure many of us have those orbital buffers form sears or elsewhere. This was all before we all learned about the PC. I have a few questions, I have not used my orbital in years, but it works. So;

1. Does anyone still use theirs?

2. What do you use it for?

3. Why switch to the PC?

I have been asked this many times and I do not have adequate answers.

Thanks

I have one from my pre-autopian days, and I haven't touched it in quite a while. I actually stopped using it before I found this place because I wasn't happy with the results I got from it. I switched to the PC because of:

1. Extra power

2. Removeable (and therefore washable and interchangeable) pads

2. Smaller size (more maneuverable and easier to hold)

I was never able to use the cheap orbital for polishing, and I'm not sure what bonnet you would use to attempt that. I never wanted to use anything on the bare foam pad that comes attached to it because it's fairly stiff and I think therefore fairly aggressive, and I never knew how to clean it. I did use it for applying liquid waxes (Meg's GC) using the little bonnets that you can get for applying wax. That just made a big mess of everything. I did use the terry bonnets to remove wax residue. I think I put swirls in with those terry bonnets.... they're not the softest things in the world.

I can't say that I was happy at all with my cheap sears orbital... I never got much good use out of it. However, I absolutely love my PC. I can do things to my paint that I could never do before, and my car looks better than in years (it was not cared for well for quite a while).

I have one of the Sears 11" orbitals. Little story here. The first one I got had a bad tangle with some wheel cleaner. Boy did that destroy the pad. It was however, replaced by Sears with no questions asked. The replacement burned up in my hands with a fair amount of foul smoke coming out of it. It also was replaced under warranty (I had to put out for and learn to use on the spot a Black & Decker with DSP). The third and current one has been my right hand man for the last 5-6 years and more than 50 cars!! It has a learn to use curve and requires more time to accomplish the desired results and that is why I expect my new PC kit from www.detailersparadise.com on Monday. I will keep using it for light work and quick touch ups as it does pretty good work with a cleaner wax and I have a LOT of bonnets for that thing. By the way, when I bought it, it was priced at $99.
