Online vendor's obligations

So, there is this online vendor I use (at times) for auto care products (not PAC) and on their website they have an area for "customer reviews" of a particular product which I have used in the past.

It seems that everytime I've reviewed a product positively, they put up the review, but any time I've put up a negative review, they don't post it. I've contacted the site about this situation, who claim my "not so favorable" reviews got lost.

Does anyone think these online vendor's have an obligation to post all opinions or only those which will help push their products?

Frankly, if I used a tool which broke easily, didn't clean well, or didn't work as advertised, would YOU want to know before you bought it from the site?

I'm contemplating boycotting this other site, because I feel as though they cannot be trusted anymore. Am I wrong?

I think it depends. If a review is something like...

"I tried the xyz and it didn't really do it for me. I prefer abc better because...." I think that sounds fine and is honest. Of course if it reads like...

"XYZ sucks. Seriously how can you sell this crap. ABC from lmnop.com is so much better then this crap" then it might get lost.

Just MO.

If the reviews are not sarcastic or demeaning, but honest and respectful, then there is no problem.

I know that on my site I will post pretty much everything that comes in (within reason)

It actually helps me hone in on the products that I no longer need to carry because my customers don't like them.

But all in all, I have had mainly favorable reviews.

I think not showing the bad comments seems pretty shady. Especially if the bad comments relate to specific product.

I'm with Todd... there are negative reviews that simply bash the product and then there are negative reviews which explain how the product worked, what you liked and didn't like, etc.

I like to think that adults are able to determine for themselves whether a given review is valid or not. If a vendor is to ask for costumer reviews, then he needs to post all of them, not just the ones he likes. If he'd prefer not to, then don't post any at all.

Actually both negative reviews were simply a replay of my experience with almost no editorializing.

I tried a particular product and it didn't work well for me and wrote about my experiences regarding the post application feel and durability.

I thought it was useful information for others but they did not post it.

Rask,

I think we're talking about different sites. It is not any of the big ones, like PAC, Autogeek, ADS etc... More of a marginal competitor.

In any event, didn't care to slam them, just thought they weren't being very honest.

Yep. I was thinking of one of the bigger ones. My bad. :out:

User Name, Many sites would rather, (in the words of the infamous John Higgs) "Look good, than Be good". Your experience is not unusual in any industry. At the risk of sounding "self serving?, we put the ratings up in hopes of weeding out products that were not living up to everyone?s expectations. I actually would hope that anyone on this community, should they find a product that is not working up to expectations would bring it to my attention. We have tried very hard not to have any "dogs" on our site. If we do, i would like to know so we can either 1) Fix it or 2) Get rid of it. Let me know if you ever find anything that isn't right. Thanks.

What's the product and the review, so others of us will be sure not to use it?
