I am interested in doing a quick engine compartment (under the hood) detail job on a car I am putting up for sale. I need to know what products and procedures are recommended for cleaning and restoring the appearance of the plastic components i.e., the fan shroud, the inner fenders, hoses etc. So far, I have repainted the valve covers and the air cleaner.

The car is a 1980 Oldsmobile, this is the last year for GM without the computer. This is posted on July 14, 2010. Thank you for any info I can use.

The plastic pieces will often benefit from a plastic polish, it'll clean off the oxidation and (depending on which one you use) maybe clear up some of the scratches/etc. too. Then you can either wax it with something like Collinite 845 or use a dressing-based approach like 303 or Autoglym's Bumper Care (there are lots of products that'll work, but those are my faves).

Rubber pieces can be cleaned with either a Rubber Cleaner or with the pricey, but impressive, Griot's Rubber Prep. Then treat with something like the 303.

EDIT: Oops, didn't notice this was in the HD vendor forum :o Apologies....if a HD rep wants to suggest products from that line I'll come back and delete this post, or a moderator can do it. For now I'll leave it up so oldcar detailer has at least some response.
