Hey Guys...

I have a 1983 Chrysler New Yorker 5th Avenue that I want to make new again. I should tell you from the start that it does need some body work on the lower left rear quarters, but its all original and I want to practice on my baby to suprise some nay sayers.

Its red but oxidized. The original pin stripes are on it and the Vinyl roof is in excellent shape. except for the rotted out rear bumper and some paint loss on the rear tail lights, I think I can knock some socks off after I spend a little bit of time on my baby. I plan on a full restro in a couple years from now, but in the mean time I want to see what majic I can work on it.

Now some questions

Should I use dish soap on it? I want to start with a good clean surface and I am thinking of using dish soap, along with Clay, is this too heavy for it? or should I just stick with some car wash soap?

I only have Canadian Tire for now and the only choices for clay are Mothers and Simoniz. Which one will perfom better?

Wire Wheels, I have just a bit of wire fire left, maybe enough to do the 4 hubcaps, if i run out what products can work best on wire wheels for really tough cleaning?

I found that SOS pads work great on white walls...is there anything better I can use?

treating the roof? dress it? or is there a better dressing out there beside the typical tire shine?

Now for attacking the paint...what products will work on a non clear coat finsih? I am thinking of a nice clay wash, then using a polsihing compound to remove the oxidization, then moving towards a gloss finish and treating it to a good quality wax like mequires ultimate wax. I want shine!!!! lol

Let me know your suggestions on planning a nice day with my baby some H20 and some magic!

Thanks!

I doubt it'll make much difference which one you use.

NO experience with the Simoniz so I'd say go with the Meguiar's.

The most potent wheel cleaner you can find. Any autobody/paint supply places in your area? They're great for Pro products.

Heh heh, it's been so many decades since I did whitewalls....sorry, no advice on that one :nixweiss

That's something else I haven't done for ages...I wonder if some of the new "trim sealant" products would work for that

You need to find the article Mike Phillips wrote on rejuvenating single stage paint. His approach *works*. Maybe check out the We Are Car Care -- Car Wax, Car Polish, Auto Detailing Supplies, Car Buffers & Car Accessories Store site and see if you can find it there.

Short version: wash and clay. Then:

-Presoak with Meguiar's M07 and let sit overnight

-Polish with something like Meguiar's M80

-Repeat above as needed

-Wax

But look up Mike's article. He and I do basically the same stuff in cases like this (I got the M07 pretreat idea from him!) and it's a very good way to do it.

Heh heh, I'd plan on a lot more than one day, even if your magic is working great ;)
