Old egg damage - possible solutions?

Hey guys - I don't have pics of this yet but I can give you a good description of what I'm talking about. Others may have seen this. The car is a 1990 black M3. I've managed to get the paint in almost perfect shape aside from one issue...

As many of you know when a car is egged you'll often see these very small "half-moon" shaped scratches in tight formations near the impact. The problem wit this car is it was egged over 2 years ago, and now the little half-moon scratches absolutely refuse to come out, I almost suspect maybe they aren't scratches at all.

I can not feel them with my fingernail, the paint is perfectly smooth. Here is what I've done so far:

Clayed - no results

Polish with AIO on a white pad - nothing.

Moved up to SFX-2 on an orange pad - nothing.

Tried a little wetsanding, then polished with SFX-1 and an orange pad - sand marring was removed, half moons still there! I even tried some NXT to see if I could fill them - nadda.

These things have resisted 3k and 2k grit paper, clay, and a combo of polishes. Is it safe to assume there is no getting them out or that the paint under the clear was somehow damaged from the egg? Does anyone have any ideas how to remove or diminish these aside from a repaint.

I'm not claiming to be an expert but egg shell is probably what you are dealing with. Hard to say without pictures. I had this happen to me once the night I brought my brand new '97 VW Passat GLX VR6 home (Black Magic- metallic with gold fleck) and parked it on the street for 1/2 hour. I took it to 3 bodyshops the next day and all said shell was embedded in paint. The only solution they had was repaint.

I love the E30 M3s. Friend's dad bought one in 89 or 90 if I remember. It was quite the ride.

If the paint is perfectly smooth, it has been chemically damaged by the egg. I was at work late one Mischief Night and some kids egged the building and my car. I called the cops (not that they could do anything, but I always like them to know things are going on in case the mischief is worse anywhere else) and they sent a car over. The patrolmen insisted I wash the car off right away, so even though it was dark and awkward....they said leaving the egg on would damage my paint. The upshot is that I have the chips and everything where the eggs hit, but there was one that I didn't see, and didn't clean off for a while, which left white staining in my dark blue paint where it hit and ran down the side of the car. I have been unsuccesful, as you have, in polishing it out...I guess it's akin to the etching from a bird bomb, etc. Sorry...for the book and for your car.

I've got one in the bed of my GMC. The shell cracks and imbeds in the paint upon impact. It pretty much shatters the clear around it. I can just barely feel mine. I got some of mine out with DACP and a PC, but I was only able to get the outer part. I'm stuck with it, so I cover it up the best I can with Turtle Wax Color Match wax. I know this stuff is horrible, but it does a nice job of filling (on black anyway) and looks pretty good when you top with EX-P.

Practice with wetsanding....it may take a more aggressive paper. Atleast if you screw it up you've gotta get it painted anyway (of course I can't bring myself to do it either :nervous: )

Cool thanks guys. Pretty much what I figured. I'll try some 1500 grit next time I see him and let him know that it's likely he'll need to get the panel repainted.
