Is this correct:

wash ( maybe twice )

clay bar

polish

wax?????

Just looking for the correct steps for my weekend car detailing comming up. Trying to get her cleaned and ready for the cold months ahead.

you shouldn't have to wash twice to start, but you may need to wash after using the clay bar. Depends on what you use for lube. You definitely want either a wax and/or sealant after the polish because that's what gives you the protection.

"Polish" is also a very broadly defined product line. Are you trying to remove swirls? Are you trying to help with oxidation? Are you looking to clean the paint? Are you looking to add some bling?

Depending on those answers you may need two or three "polishes" used in proper abrassive order.

What sort of product line are you using (i.e. over the counter or boutique line) and what exactly are you trying to accomplish. But yes, you do have the general principles in proper order, so that's a very good start.

Good enough for a newbie :nixweiss???

I am basically looking to clean up my baby. It is a 96 Mustang GT ... the paint is in pretty good condition. I bought her with only 50,000 miles and I have keep her pretty clean. The only problem is the bug and tar marks on the front bumper and the fender wells. The car is white so everything seems to show on it. What would be best to clean this with, seal it, and make it really shine??? Also, there are some swirls in the paint that I have noticed ... how do you remove these?

John,

Here is what I use on my 'Stang.

Wash with Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash and sheepskin mitt, dry with waffle weave microfiber towels.

Clay with Mothers Clay Bar kit.

Meguiars #9 swirl mark remover for those nasty little swirls and scratches that always seem to find their way onto my paint. Apply by hand with foam applicator and remove with microfiber towels. I actually use a dual action polisher but, I gather you don't have one and #9 will work just fine by hand.

Meguiars #81 hand polish to fill in anything that #9 couldn't remove, it also adds a deep gloss to the paint. Apply by hand using foam applicator and remove with microfiber towels.

Meguairs #26 high tech yellow wax, it is a polymer/carnauba blend so it has pretty good durability and it won't stain your black trim white. Apply by hand with foam applicator and remove with microfiber towels. I usually wait a day and put down a second layer.

Thanks for everyone's input. I just found this site and it has already proved to be very valuable. THANKS!!!!!

Once I get my Digi-cam back and the car cleaned ... I will post some pics. Thanks again. JP

I'm a newbie. Can you explain the reason for the detailing spray step in between each wax layer? What does that accomplish?

Is Meg's #7 still considered an acceptable alternative to #81? The reason I ask is I just recently picked up some #26, and already have #9 & #7 on my shelf too.

(but no PC yet).

#7 and #81 are interchangable, the only difference is that #81 is a little easier to work with. They will both give you a great deep gloss. Actually the picture I posted is of the car after #9,#7 and #26.

I think it just helps remove the excess wax redsidue before the next layer.

1-wash with Dawn

2-Bug + Tar Remover spray where necessary

3-clay bar

4-polish

5-Wash w/ car wash soap (optional)

6-wax (wax x 2)
