I try to be very careful when it comes to changing the oil in my vehicles. Always trying to be compliant with current environmental rules, I put down a thick (old) comforter to catch any renegade drips and make a soft surface for the "big guy" to lay on while changing the oil.
My son, on the other hand, did not inherit my same concerns for a green environment.
Last week, while changing his oil, he (accidently, of course) spilled at least two quarts of dirty oil in my driveway. He used an entire roll of paper towels soaking it up, but a sloppy job at best!
Here's my procedure for oil spills:
1. Wipe up excess.
2. Spray liberally with a good quality degreaser/APC
3. Scrub in all directions with a stiff brush
4. Sprinkle liberally with cat litter
5. 'GRIND' the cat litter into the spill with the sole of my shoe (this takes effort, pressure and time)
6. Sweep up with a stiff broom
7. Place soiled product in a trash bag
8. Repeat if necessary
This method cleaned up the dirty oil stain very well. It was almost completely gone! Good as new.
Also, if you're concerned about polution, it keeps the bad stuff from washing down the storm drain.
