Oil Change Interval

I use Mobil 1 exclusivly in the SC430 and change it every 5000 miles. Mobil 1 has been the leader in synthetic oils from long ago and still make high quality synthetic today for more higher reving engines and tight tolerance. Hell, they have a 0-30w oil.



There are more "exotic" synthetics, but still always stay with Mobil1.



I had Lexus do a service on my previous 2001 RX300, and they were just floored on how well Mobil 1 does in keeping the engine clean and act like it it brand new.



Just follow at least what the MFG requires, and you will be fine. Changing oil and filter prior is fine too, it just keeps the engine clean and lubed. Todays gas just adds more debris in the oil in time, so that's why I change so often.

Doesn't Mobil produce most of the synthetic base stock that other companies use to make thier oils?

yep, amsoil buys their pao basestock from them. Im running mobil 1 0w20 in my 02 civic ex, and amsoil 10w40 in my ski. Both have gotten better gas mileage, and my ski's startup is much much quieter.

Sorry, but when the advice to not run synthetic comes from:



#1 The person that built my engine

#2 The top MR2 mechanic in the country

#3 One of Rolls Royce's chief engine designers



...I think I'll take the advice of those people instead No hard feelings, but I think that among the three of them, they're a LITTLE more qualified to answer that question (not to mention that, among them, they have approx. 50 years automotive experience)

Reasoning behind using dino oil during break-in in rebuilt or custom built engine is that it allows more wear and speeds up the whole process. You can start with synthetic but it will just take more time. In any case taking it easy and changing your oil quickly is the key in enjoying long life of such engine. Initial break-in is probably first 500-1000 miles but engine breaks-in much longer so start bringing the revs up slowly.



As far as production engines go it really depends on manufacturer but most performance oriented cars come with synthetic from factory. Although Mobil1 uses that in their advertising they are not the only ones, Castrol puts synthetics in every BMW and most VWs and Audis.

What I find interesting is that Honda still uses specially formulated break-in dino oil as factory fill.

Be careful with synthetics like pennzoil, castrol and valvoline. They are not real synthetics, rather group 3(severly hydrocracked oils) Real syns are pao esters(group 4 and 5). Mobil 1, amsoil(not the xl 7500 line), and redline are the best synthetics out there. There is one true synthetic made by castrol, and thats the 0w30 formula, and its made in germany, but its made its way over in some us stores.

I don't know about pennzoil and valvoline but Castrol makes quite a few Group IV/V based synthetics unfortunately not many for sale in US.

You can find 0W-30 Syntec in more and more AutoZone stores and this is exactly the same oil (Castrol SLX) BMW fills their cars with in Europe. US bound cars get Castrol TXT Softec Plus 5W-30 that you can find in US at BMW dealerships labeled as BMW High Performance Synthetic. BMW dealers also sell Castrol 10W-60 TWS Motorsport. All these oils are believed to be Group IV/V based.
