OEM Pads

I thought I should give a little shameless plug for Steve's towels. Anyway, here's my story:

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Zaino user (have been since 1998) and was of the Sal Zaino school of thought -- namely, 100% cotton towels were the only right way to apply and remove Zaino products. This was a fantastic philosophy, and I had no reason to doubt it, until I got my new Corvette back in October. I don't know what the deal is, but my 'Vette must have one of the softest clearcoats EVER. If you look at the car wrong you'll scratch it. Anyway, I found that whenever I'd quick-detail the car with Z-6, either the QD would smear or, if I was at all aggresive, I'd wind up with fine scratches. Not good. Mind you, I was using 100% Fieldcrest Royal Velvet towels...the good stuff. And I had plenty of Z-2/Z-5 on the car, so the smearing couldn't be from a lack of polish.

Recently, however, I found this site. Ah, to be among folks like me! :D Anyway, I bought the PC 7424 and soon learned about the magic of MF bonnets. Now when I needed to QD the car I'd get out the buffer and use that to eliminate any possibility of scratching or smearing. This worked great, but having to get out the buffer every time I QD'd was a pain. Plus, those little MF bonnets only go so far before they need washed, and since I have only four of them, that wasn't very far. Of course, I always attributed the success of my new QD method to the buffer, but now I know differently.

I got my first shipment of Steve's towels last week. The first time I used them to detail my car, I was simply awestruck. No smears!! No streaks!! No scratches!! My QD results using Steve's towels were identical to what I was getting using the PC and MF bonnets, but with much less work and effort! Very . I'm a changed man...and I can tell you this...those cotton towels have been relegated to window duty. I just placed another order for more of Steve's towels, and I can promise that that won't be the last.

Thanks to this forum and Steve's towels, I'm finally back in detailing nirvana.

Schwab, completely agreed here. I had been following Sal's words on 100% cotton towels over the years, and ever since I tried Yoseve MF, those are the only towels touching my paint nowadays. By the way, Sal's still testing MF.

That been said, a good quality 100% cotton towel had never scratched my paint and I would have no problem using it again if I run out of MF.

Try using Steve's MF's on the windows. You don't even need any cleaner, just wipe! No lint.... If they are really dirty you can use some cleaner and terry, but finish with the MF.

I'd definitely have to agree with this last remark. I really like the way it works on glass. I also like the towel from neatitems that is specifically designed for glass. But its kind of hard to beat the versatility of Steve's or CMA's towels.

Soft as hell, the pick up water great and  no lint!!!!!!! What else could you ask for?? With MF's coming out of the woodwork these days from everyone and their brother, its nice to know where you can still pick up some nice high quality ones.

This is from PAC's site:
Trade-offs:

These OEM-Style, CCS pads are not as forgiving as our Lake Country Hi-Gloss, 1-1/4 inch, CCS, 6-1/2 inch diameter pads. They do not have the patented Constant Pressure Technology that uses a layer of engineered, instant rebound foam between the pad and the backing plate to absorb off-axis movements while keeping the pressure of the pad on the surface constant. Tilting a 7/8 inch thick, OEM-Style pad will change the polishing pressure on the paint.

Secondly, OEM-Style pads have a flat-cut, top edge. Our step-up, CCS, 6-1/2 inch pads have a curved outer edge for easy transitions over seams and edges. OEM-Style pads require the operator to pay a little more attention when going over seams and edges.

Interesting! Unforunately I am going to have to go through a few more pads before I need more. I like the flat pads more then the regular ccs pads. Not sure about these high gloss ccs though. The Hydro-Techs are great for me though.

I have always used Lake Country Pads...are the OEM pads that Proper Auto sales worth purchasing

All I see labeled OEM are CCS pads. I've used a bunch of these and prefer the flat pads. Of the flat LC pads I prefer the ones PAC sells with the Constant Pressure foam and rounded edges. That said, the OEM CCS pads work OK. If you get 'em cheap enough they may be worth it for you. YMMV.

TL...What does YMMV stand for?

I only use the OEM pads for white. I think the LC flat white pads are very dense, and a bit hard to control. Even orange pads are less dense and easier to control. OEM pads are half the thickness of regular flat pads and feel GREAT gliding across the paint. Very easy to control, but I only use them for white pads!
