Odor removal, is charcoal actually effective?

I have a pickup that was a rollover that I overhauled, its back window was smashed out and the guard dogs made it their home in the impound yard for about a week in the winter, I properly cleaned/shampooed aired out the interior, as well as tried various odor removal techniques (several times) and it appears spotless but there is still a lingering odor. I have heard of people placing charcoal in the interior and it supposed to absorb the smells, has anyone tried this? I dont want to waste my time with old wives tales that dont work (like a bowl of vinegar which made the cab smell of... vinegar on top of the previous smell.)

Yes and no. It absorbs odors well, but you still have to find and remove the cause of the odor.

Try baking soda. It absorbs and changes the PH of the odor. Let it sit for a day and vacuum out.
