Odd request today...

Had a potential customer message me today asking if I would be able to come out and buff out his fiberglass pool slide (assuming it’s gel coat). Said it’s very chalky and wants it rubbed out and waxed.

Now I know I can do it if it is in fact gel coat... however the first question that comes to mind is liability. I do the work, some kid flies off the slide and breaks a leg or something. One can only assume that could come back to me.

Is this something I should pass on? I hate to turn down work but in this case I feel it may be for the right reasons

I would think you would be ok. I believe this would fall under homeowners policy. If you put in a new concrete driveway and someone slipped on it you would not be at fault. Just my opinion though.

You are not going to make it better than new are you? You are just restoring the finish to original spec. Make sure you are connected to a GFI outlet and make your money.

It`s a slide. It`s supposed to be slick. Where`s the liability?

You could just put Sonax BSD on it after you clean it up. Screech, screech screech, plop (as the kid falls off the end).

Seriously, they make acrylic sealants for floors that are non-slick. You could put that at the top where someone would step prior to sitting down.

Ok thanks guys. In this law suit happy “it’s your fault not my stupidity” world we live in today I just felt the need to ask

Cover your "butt": ask him to sign a waiver of liability. Chances are , though, he may not want you to do the work then according to HIS specifications. Your concern is the use of wax and then slippage by any person.
Unfortunately, a waiver of liability is NOT legally rock-solid. A local ski hill here in Wisconsin found that out when someone was seriously injured and that injured party sued the ski hill for negligence. The ski hill lost the suite and is no long in operation, despite having all skiers sign a waiver of liability.

I did it to my cousins slide. It doesnt get slick just from the polish and wax. That wax will wear off within a week the way these sit in the sun all day. You should be fine.
