I just found it interesting.
On top of the media fear mongering, I do believe that there's a lot of opportunists out there who will jump on this be it for notoriety, their 15 minutes of fame, to get out of a payment they don't like, etc.
While I don't dismiss that there's a problem, it's kind of funny to me to see these 5+ year old cars coming out of the woodwork that are now all of a sudden having problems now that's it splashed all over the media. Why were they not having problems before now? It's just awful convenient how easy it would be to be a top story on the news right now with a Toyota vehicle.
This isn't the only article I've come across lately that hints that this may be a overblown issue. Just this morning I saw two articles about the ABC guy who rigged up a Toyota to fail. ABC pretty much said they shouldn't have aired it now, without really coming out and saying it in so many words. Also, the guy manipulated the system far beyond what would ever happen in normal, everyday use.
There's also some questions floating about by the lady who testified before congress. From what I could tell, there's not a lot of physical evidence to suggest that she tried to do many of the things to stop the vehicle that she says she did. That may or may not be much more than hearsay - I assume it depends on the group you choose to listen to.
Not really trying to be a conspiracy theorist here or anything, but I think there's a lot more than meets the eye regarding the Toyota situation, not to mention how convenient it would be for some other parties to benefit from all of it, either individuals or companies (and the associated unions).
