Newbie/New Black GTO

Stayed up way too late last night reading all the great information on this website!:p

I just purchased a new Black GTO. The dealership got a very good professional detailer to polish and wax the car and the car looks great! Nice wet shiney look with no swirls or cobwebs like most of the other dealerships I've seen.

I would like to know what you guys would recommend for me to keep this car looking brand new or even better? What kind of polish and wax would you recommend? Or should I go with a sealent instead? Many people on the GTO forums swear by Zaino, is this really the best stuff for my car? I also want something that give good protection and lasts long too. Is that realistic? Any input would be very much appreciated!:bow

I used Zaino on a red car.. Worked well, but was not the end all. I then went to Wolf Gang and I liked it on Red a lot better, but would jump back and forth. Then I went to 1 Z polishes and they are okay, I prefer my Wolf Gang.

I would do this:

Klasse AIO

Zaino Z5 for nowâ€Â¦ I hate to push Zaino because I think it is over hyped, but from your picture I think that combo would be perfectâ€Â¦

I am currently working with Poor Boys products and am impressed but to soon to really sayâ€Â¦

Welcome.

As far as the "best" goes, it doesn't exist. Every product has it's positives and negatives. Personal preference is really the biggest factor.

Sealants will provide longer protection and a brighter shine.

Carnaubas will not last as long and provide a deeper glow.

Don't ever limit yourself to one line of products, as every company has a little something to offer.

The thing to focus on is your process and techniques. Proper washing/drying/maintaining is the key to keeping marring to a minimum on your finish.

A daily driver (especially a black one) will inevitably get surface marring.

Welcome!!! You'll find there's two very distinct groups of people around here... those who swear by Zaino and those who use other products. Personally, I've never used Zaino before so I won't say anything about it other than those who like it, LOVE it. The process can be very time consuming and almost obessive about applying it, some people put 10 or more applications.

I really like the other products (meguiars, 1z, etc.). There are some very expensive products around, but you can still do a quality job with some of the average priced products like meguiars.

Do searches on the board on the board for the areas you want to detail (i.e. windows, wheels, etc) and see what other people are saying about specific products. Also, some products work better when applied by machine, others by hand. Some give better results for dark colors or light colors. If you want to learn more about Zaino, search for it here. You'll find a few threads that are huge "debating" about the products.

Good luck!!!

I will agree there are so many out there each with a unique benefit... NXT has really impressed me.... Worked better on my red than Zaino imo..

Find the look you like under "Click and Brag", then get that stuff and do it - simple.

Then next step is a lot more expensive, both in time and money. READ the entire forum and see what people use and the techniques used. TALK to your finance company and ask them if it OK to skip, say 3 months, so you can buy all the stuff necessary to protect THEIR investment. THEN buy the polish, the MF's, the tools and the finshes you want to play around with. That will pay dividends in the long run, because when the financing is finally done with, you will have a down-right georgeous ride......:D  :D  :D

Nice car. When I first saw the thumbnail in the gallery, I thought it was a German car.

Are you sure the dealer did not put a glaze on it to hide imperfections? It is a common practice and after a few washes or a product like AIO, it wears off/is removed.

Cool car. How do you like it so far? The black is a metallic, right? I need to go look at them in person.

I love the car! For the price I dont think you can go wrong. Yes it is metallic paint.

Thank you! I will never know for sure. The car looked very good when I test drove it off the lot. It had some pin striping on it that I didn't want. Dealer said it could be removed but he would prefer to wait and have their detailer do it and give the car a good detail as apposed to the kids in back doing it. I brought the car back a couple of days later and the detailer worked on it for a few hours. The car looked fantastic afterwards!! I guess only time will tell what the paint is really like, but it defenitely looked better than the cars at many of the dealerships I went to.

I've noticed alot of you guys use PC machines. I have always been scared of using any machine thinking that its very easy damage the paint with one. Is it more beneficial than by hand?

I was looking for some personal experience with new black cars to see what products and methods have brought that VERY WET black look that I love so much!

Thanks for everyones input, I'm learning a lot from you guys!

Welcome aboard B737Capt!

Hey, good luck with your new GTO. May have to look into one when my current Acura lease is up.

Just my opinion regarding the PC...I've had mine now for well over a year and can't imagine ever deatiling my car without it.

I started using it on a brandy new Acura TL and had no problems applying all sorts of various products including scratch removers.

It's safe and fun so go ahead and give it a try.

and my opinion on how to treat a black car....if you decide to go the carunuba route then you must try Pinnacle Souveran. It was made for black cars!!!! Pricey but hey, your new GTO deserves it !!!

Have fun !

Dr Groove is correct... Get the Porter Cable and a bunch of pads(I prefer the Sonus pads):up

The Souveran is a pure treat on my Black SS...looks so good !!!

Just read and learn and get ready to have fun detailing !!!:xyxthumbs

For black, and without spending $60-70 for Souveran, I would use AIO + SG + Natty's. Natty's really gives a wet look.

Can't imagine going back to detailing by hand. The PC produces such superior results. It is quite difficult to damage paint using a PC.

SG? Is this Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze?

Where do you buy Nattys?

Is the PC used only for polishing? Not waxing right?

SG = Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze

You can buy Natty's from Autopia, AutoGeek, and Poorboy's direct.

You can use the PC for applying and removing wax. I apply carnauba toppers by hand and remove with the PC. Seems to give superior results when removed by machine than when buffed off by hand.

Scotch-Brite pads. :)

There's nothing I'm aware of that's safe for one color, but not another. Just be aware that black shows flaws, so be extra careful. :wavey

Based on your opinions and what I have seen in pictures I think I will try this combination:

Wash with: Megs NXT

Polish with: AIO

Seal with: SG

Wax with: Souveran

Does it do any good to use more than one coat of any of the above products? Should I wait any period of time between applications of the above products? How often should I repeat this regime with a car that spends a few days a week in the hot Florida sun?

Sounds like a good plan but you may wana pickup a mild polish incase you get some minor marring down the road. Your plan of attack sounds great just focus on your washing and drying routine more than anything to prevent any washing induced marring :D

You can never have too many coats of SG or souveran :D...just make sure to lay down the SG first.

I think that 2-3 coats of SG is fine and a coat of Souveran every couple of weeks would look great on your ride...
