Newbie Help: What RPM's operate at what PC 7424 dial settings and pad choices?

I am buffing for the first time tomorrw using my brand new PC 7424. I am going to be using 3M Perfect-It II Foam Pad Polish Glaze for removal of minor swirl/scratches on my 04 red Tundra. I will follow it up with 3M Ultrafina, then Meguiars #7 Glaze, then Meguairs #26 wax.

What RPM's does the PC operate at each of the dial settings?

I have read that I usually want to stay in the 1500rpm range. I will be using 4" LC pads, too. I figured I would start the Perfect-It with a white LC pad first to see if it removes the imperfections and move to a orange pad, if needed. I would apply the Ultrafina with a black pad and follow up with the Meg's on red pads. Does this sound logical? What speed settings would be recommended for each step?

...PCs operate in OPM, not RPM. I really don't know what speeds equal which OPM, but it doesn't matter.

Spread the polish with speed 3, work at speed 6 until broken down.

:xyxthumbs I agree w/BigPoppa. Stay with moving the pad about an inch per second and you should be fine.

So you mean I will move it around in a 2x2 vertical and horizontal formation to cover the area than increase speed to 6 to break it down? Just making sure I understand your comment. Thanks.

You got it. If your applying waxes or glazes with a pc, use speed 3-4.

Just do the clay by hand, I really don't see anyone using those machine clay things, and IMO you are just asking for trouble with one.

One more thing...

What about spead settings on 3M Perfect-It II and Ultrafina?

Their website says about 1500-2000rpms, but since you said the dial setting doesn't correlate to rpms since it is an orbital, what dial setting on a 4" pad would approximate that rotational speed?

FWIW, I prefer speed 5 because speed 6 seems to jiggle more than spinning the pad. I think it depends on pad size. Speed 6 is also pretty rough on your hands. You can spread at any speed, but the faster it is, the more likely to sling.

If you want to get into those speeds you need a rotary not a pc.It seems you are very new to detailing so just stick with the pc and do some searching and studying first as you have a lot to learn.
