Newbie from Kentucky.

Hello all,



My name is Nathan and I've lurked this site for quite a while, using the knowledge gained, until now, mostly for use on my personal vehicle. Recently, I got a job at a local and well respected detailing business and fell in love with the field.



So in love in fact, that my plans have changed from going to college, to opening a detail shop of my own in Lexington, Kentucky. It feels great to take in a 5,000 dollar car and make it look like 8,000 dollars.



I've found tons of great info here and will continue to study this site and pick every brain on the forums, and hopefully give some advice too.



If you have any input for this newbie, I would love to hear it. I understand getting started and putting my name out there will be rough, so if you have any advice there, that would be great.

Hey Nathan!



Not to criticize you in your opening post, but I highly recommend you rethink not going to college. Many people on here have started off just doing weekend details on top of their 9-5 job, to get their name out and get a good customer base, while still always knowing they would be able to pay the bills, and then when they were ready they started a full-time business. But that was not from ground zero. Just saying, it's better to have a plan you can fall back on in the event the detailing thing doesn't work out.



With that out of the way, welcome to Autopia! I'm in Louisville (not a Cards fan, don't worry...). There are a handful of other Louisvillians on here too I believe.

I appreciate the looking out Hockey, but I do plan on keeping a job until my client base gets large enough to justify quitting it and going full time detailing. Perhaps I should have mentioned I have a job offer at a hospital where im moving.



My father has been a great source of advice in this. He runs a Body Shop that he started from scratch like I plan on starting my business. I know it can be a slow process, but im patient and it'll be worth it.

I don't detail for a living, but have made a lot of money over the years just doing it for customers who I truly enjoy. The best advice I would give you is to be fanatical about keeping your customers happy early on (but don't let them walk all over you), and don't be afraid to ask for referrals. Believe it or not, the great majority of people are always willing to help, provided that they are happy with the service/results you gave them.



Also, get your practice in on your family's cars. Nothing more important than family these days, and nobody is a better word-of-mouth advertising source than a happy relative!

Haha, nothin against the cards, its just that most people assume I am a fan since I'm from louisville. I'm not originally from here so I don't care about UK/UL. Where in louisville are you?

Thats some good advice, I'll definitely keep that in mind. My father's jobs at the Body Shop are 99% return customers, so I definitely will treat every vehicle like it's mine.
