Started thinking about learning how to properly care for a car's exterior a few months ago. I have to admit, I thought caring for your paint was washing it in the driveway as much as you can, and then applying a wax from Autozone:redface:. After I saw millions of swirls and light scratches in my Kalahari Beige 530i, and after paying $300 to have them professionally removed:mad:, I started searching for a better way. I'm a sports official for high school and college. Those contests usually occur evenings, giving me time to detail my cars in the AM, as well as other people's cars. I haven't started yet - but what got my interest was a Griot's Garage ad in Auotweek. They sent me a free CD; then I ordered their detailing handbook ($12). Before I swore holy allegiance to Griot's (and me being ultra-cynical), I thought I would look around. It seems to me from THIS forum, the Groit's orbital is OK, but the PC or UDC is better. Is this really true? I look forward to visiting this forum often - so, wazzup?:)

The Cyclo is better. :D And from all the things I read, I sure wouldn't mind having one of those new Flex machines.

My advice to you would be to do a lot of reading and not get caught up in all the hype. You don't have to buy everything from a single source, and you don't have to buy the most expensive stuff out there. There's some great stuff from a lot of different manufacturers, and limiting yourself to just one is shooting yourself in the foot right out of the gate. Also, don't discount products just because the come from Auto Zone, Wal Mart, or the like. There's some darn good over-the-counter products as well.

I won't say product has nothing to do with it, but there's (a lot) more to it than product alone.

Read up & welcome to the site.

I was just using "autozone" as a generic way of saying I was pretty stupid about taking care of paint. I'm just semi-stupid now ... but getting smarter all the time!! Thanks for the info on Cyclo. Even though it has two heads, is it still an orbital? Also, what's a flex machine? Thanks!

As was suggested earlier, don't get caught up in all the hype. You can find lots of good products at your local stores.
I personally think you can find better on-line, but many of us got by pretty good for years without the internet.
Do a search for "Flex Polisher" and you will find some info on the machine. Sounds like quite a machine. It also isn't cheap.
You can get a pretty good start taking care of your vehicles without buying a bunch of equipment right away.

Yeah, the Cyclo is an orbital, as well as the Flex (I think it is a forced rotation orbital). Both are a little better in the way of defect removal than the PC/UDM. Although I think they all have a place, the Cyclo just fits my needs better.
