Newb w/questions...

Im sure you all get tired of newbs asking questions, but I was wanting to introduce myself and ask a few. Im a meguiars enthusiast, that’s purty much all I use on my Jeep, and I am looking to buy a buffer and have settled on this one(

http://www.detailcity.com/porter-cable-7424-dual-action-polisher.html ). Is that a good buffer? I noticed that it comes with a backing plate and a foam pad but should I get one of the polishing pads or finishing pads? I try to do the 3 step(paint cleaner, polish, and wax) at least twice a year. Before heading off to college this fall Im wanting to go ahead and get it over with so I don’t have to worry about it while in school.

One thing Ive noticed about meguiars wax is it only last about 4-5months if I do not keep it up with quik detailer or quik wax, which is something I may not be able to do with engineering school. Is there another wax that doesn’t cost a lot and last longer? Ive heard of this Rejex stuff. Is it any count? Thanks guys!

Edit: Here is a pic I took of my stuff:

I do not want to replace the 3step, just replace the 3rd step with a better wax. I saw this Souveran stuff, and there is no way Im paying $70 for a bottle of wax.

Yes, the PC is one of the most well regarded machines on Autopia. Get it for sure. You should get 1 light cutting, 2 polishing, and 1 finishing pad(don't forget the proper backing plate as well). Collinite lasts really long without much maintanance(like 5 months) and is very inexpensive. Use the search function and you will find a wealth of information is on this site.

Thanks, there is so much stuff to read on this site its crazy! Ive been reading for the past couple hours and feel like Ive gotten no where. Where would one buy this collinite?

It says it comes with a backing plate and a foam pad. Why would I want a cutting pad? I figured I would just get 1 finshing pad and 1 polishing pad, not much money at the time. Whats the difference between the polishing pad and the finishing pad? Would I use the polishing pad with the paint cleaner(step 1) and the polish(step 2), then use the finish pad with the wax?

Edit: My gosh, theres 7 different type of wax. What kind do I need? I dont want to cut into the paint at all! Dont need to remove any scratches or anything.

Edit#2: It is ok to use the meguiars 3 step with a buffer right? There isnt a certain type of wax to use with a buffer is there? I just do not want to screw anything up. First time ever using a buffer.

Will the backing plate I got from detail city(the one that comes with the PC) work with the pads from Meguiars.com? I thought it came with a polishing pad so I only bought 1 finishing pad only to find out it doesnt come with the pad. I want to order a set of 3 from meguiars and need to know if they will work with the backing plate from detailcity.com. Thanks!

BlueLibby04- Welcome to Autopia! I sympathize with you regarding the info-overload and I'll try to keep this simple (though there's a lot to tell you...).

Scrap the pad that comes with the PC, it's *NOT* something you want to use on your paint (assuming it's the factory Porter Cable pad).

The Meguiar's pads will work fine with that backing plate. As best I can tell I have the exact same plate and I've used Meg's pads on it. The pad 3-pack with two 8006 and one 9006 is a good way to go.

If you want to do any serious correction, you'll need a more abrasive product than anything you have now. The Deep Crystal step 1 is *VERY* mildly abrasive (as in almost nonabrasive), the Deep Crystal step 2 polish *is* nonabrasive, as is the wax. I recommend you order some #80 Speed Glaze, which is one of Meguiar's best products. Used with a polishing pad it'll do a lot more than the Deep Crystal step 1 but it's still nice and mild.

The Collinite waxes are great. I like the 476S paste wax (apply it nice and thin) which lasts a long, long time. The 845 Insulator Wax is easier to use, but doesn't last as long. With a few coats of the 476S you might get by until the end of the semester, it lasts *that* long. Whole different ballgame compared to the Deep Crystal wax ;)

Sorry to jack the thread, but I just got home from Lowes with a PC7424. I'm set on ordering a pack of pads and an abrasive cleaner. I have a 2005 Honda Accord Coupe in Graphite Grey Pearl (dark (almost a dark, dark blue to a mild black), flakey grey) and it has mild to moderate swirling. I was wondering what type of pads I should order and what products to help tackle these? Also which pad order should I use as well? If anyone here I can talk to privately can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it. Through AIM or something.

Just talk about it here daniel. That way everyone else can learn from it, like i do!

I went and got some #7, #26 and NXT tech wax yesterday Accumulator(would of gotten #80 but they didnt have it). Ive already spent to much on this stuff so Ill just hold out on ordering more stuff for alittle while(If I didnt have to order it I would get more). My paint isnt in bad shape at all, little to no swirls so Ill think Ill be ok with what I have. Im going to practice on my dads work truck first then Ill move on to my jeep.

Daniel, as said #80 with a megs 8006 pad is really good for removing mild swirls. Its always best to start will the least abrasive product to see if it will get the job done. If #80 doesnt do it then you could move on up to #83 and see how it does. Finish with a good polish and wax and see what you think. Im still kinda new at this stuff, Just throwing out what Ive learned. :hifive:

Hahaha, sounds good. I thought i'd be stepping on your toes for jacking your thread! Is the Megs non-OTC products the best? I always see a lot of people using SSR2.5 and what not. I'm going to start looking into the detailing products and doing some research since I have the actual PC in my hands now. Also, what is the best brand of pads for the job as well?

Sheesh, I don't mean to sound all negative/critical :o but....the #7 isn't all that different from the Deep Crystal step #2. You might even find that you *prefer* the DC #2! See what you think.

I wish Meguiar's had places stock a different selection of products (I assume they have a say in it). There's too much redundancy in what's on the shelves and too few products that do what people want/expect. Just IMO of course, not that they asked me...
