New VW GTI first detail

Lots of issues trying to post a new thread... hopefully this works!

Sorry for yet another new car thread but I wanted to ask you guys if my plan for the first detail is reasonable. I plan on keeping this car for a long time.

I decided to replace my '97 Jetta with 175k miles and picked up a 2010 VW GTI in Carbon Steel Grey. I.m very happy so far and proud to finally own my first new car at 32 years old.

So far I have:

-Washed with ONR

-Removed wheels and washed, clayed and applied Chemical Guys wheel wax

-Treated interior plastics with Armor All Detail spray (non-greasy). I have a bottle of 303 in the mail so I picked the AA up in the meantime.

-Treated leather with Lexol cleaner and conditioner

For the paint I plan to:

-Clay with chemical guys soft clay

-Klasse AIO

-Klasse SG

-Opti-Seal

Is the SG + Opti-Seal overkill?

What color pad should I apply the AIO and SG with using a UDM and LC pads?

Many thanks!

Wow you guys have no idea what I went through to get that thread to post. Been trying since saturday. Apparently there is some issue with the forums the Mods are trying to figure out at this point.

I apologize for the inappropriate subject but it was the only way I could get it to post.

probably a grey/black LC pad would be best. (Or red or blue)

And Im not entirely sure, but there might be an issue with the OS bonding to the SG.

Im not an expert on SG by any means however, so you might do some checking on that.

av8roc- Nice car :xyxthumbs

I'd rather just use the KSG and keep adding more as needed. Any particular reason why you want to top it?

I apply KSG by hand as I can't get as thin an application via machine. If I were to try it (again) by machine, I'd absolutely use the Gold LC pads.

For the KAIO you can use any mild polishing pad, though some others prefer finishing pads (I like the more porous nature of the polishing pads myself). Just pick something with no cut in-and-of iteself. On not-too-soft clear (which I assume your VW has), I like the Griot's orange polishing pad and I hear the LC tangerine is basically the same thing.

av8roc,

I was able to change the thread title for you; I'm glad you found a way to get your thread to post.

Good advice, thanks! I like the Opti-Seal but this being a new car I knew I didnt need an abrasive polish so I figured I would use some KAIO I have around. I picked up the SG to compliment the AIO and as I understand it bonds well with the AIO. I figured the Opti would be a nice topper but now not so sure it will bond:nervous:

Thanks Tort, yeah I played around for a few days and I think I figured out a loophole.:xyxthumbs

Nice car! I had an '07 with the same Navi/Leather Package 2 and a bunch of goodies including the APR STage 2 upgrade. Loved that car. CHeck out golfMVI.com.....you'll soon find a million dollars worth of things you need (I was on MKV).

Thanks man, yeah I've been on vwvortex for a long time. I am looking at APR stage 1 right now with a carbino intake. I know.. there in an endless amount of things to be done!

Just picked up one for myself - 2dr CSG DSG. Jacky cloth rather than leather - couldn't justify the added expense, but those bolsters are fantastic.

I've got about 700miles on mine now but haven't had time to detail yet (between lots of work, an upcoming vacation, and horrible weather). When I get back from vacation, though, I'm doing the same thing as you!

ONR, Meg's Clay, KAIO, KSG. Wheels are getting ONR'd then wheelwax. I unfortunately do not have hose access (d'oh!), and the 17s are bound to become winter wheels, so I'm probably not going to bother pulling them off to get the barrels.

I already hit up the interior plastics with 303 Aerospace, I have some 303 fabric protectant that's waiting for a slightly warmer, sunnier day to apply.

Unfortunately, my dealer delivered the car with a big ol' clearcoat scratch in the hood >_< so I've gotta get that fixed before I'll truly be happy with the car... I'm going to give the dealer 1 chance to fix it, then make them pay for a real detailer if (read: when) they screw it up.

Nice! Sorry about the scratch though. I didn't catch a burn from the detailers wheel in the driver side door jamb on pre-buy inspection so I will have to have someone respray it. Its small but will drive me nuts I'm sure.

I love the Jacky cloth and to be honest I didn't order my car, it just was delivered with everything I wanted. The autobahn I could have gone either way with but sunroof was a must.

Are you going to apply the SG with a machine or by hand? Post some pics when you get it detailed.

I'd just work at getting multiple layers of KSG on it; I like six. Appearance enhancement only calls for about four layers, but six give me wonderful durability.

See how you like the look after four. I'm generally not crazy about the look of KSG, but in some cases the durability and protection are more important to me.
