When I dropped $120 to get the interior only of my wife's X5 detailed in the summer, I thought there has to be a better way. How about I spend $120 on top quality products and learn to do this myself . . .

I ended up spending closer to $200 on stuff - add another $200 since I just ordered the PC 7424XP last week! - but have enjoyed the level of quality I have been able to bring to both her car and my new Subaru Outback XT wagon. It is very fulfilling and relaxing to spend a couple of hours making something you spend so much time in look immaculate.

However, I have a lot to learn and am looking forwards to picking up more knowledge here. The first are of concern is fixing a scratch on my front bumper caused by my garage door closing onto my car: it is about 4 inches long and DEEP. Hard to ignore but I think will need some professional work.

1st off welcome to DC from Sonoma County. You are on a great site for learning.

If you want some lesson once you get your PC, drive your car up to me. I've got about 30 years of part time experience in detailing and would be happy to help you!

You a member at bimmerfest?

Welcome to "The City". You're in the right place if you're looking for the tricks to do it right. Actually most of it isn't tricks but hard work and quality products. If you don't mind putting in the time it's a very rewarding hobby, not to mention the money you won't be paying someone to do it for you.

Welcome exsterminator and enjoy the site! What products did you get for your PC? I'm a fellow BMW owner and would love to help you with the X5 paint if you need anything at all. Glad to have you here.

Very kind offer and if we make a trip up there, I'll give you a shout. My in-laws live in Vallejo and we see them weekly - whereabouts in Sonoma are you? PC due to arrive today!

I am a member of bimmerfest and xoutpost. I have been a member of the latter for years but only joined bimmer this year because I was going to purchase a 330i instead of the outback. In the end though the AWD and cargo space won out for the family man so will have to wait a while to get a coupe for myself! Have same screen name on both

The paint on the X is in very good shape. It is an 04 so could probably do with a clay bar treatment and has a few minor scratches and chips but otherwise in great shape.

Since I have a new car and the Xs paint is good, I went more for the maintenance side of PC pad and product than repairing scratches/swirls. Got a coarse green, 2 white and 2 grey pads. I have Pinnacle Paint Cleansing Lotion for pre-wax and light cleaning and top it off with TechWax. Been happy with results so far. What would you recommend?

I bought this package from Autogeek

Porter Cable 7424 & Foam Pad Kit - Car Buffer

as a birthday present to myself and interested to hear what I ought to consider adding to my ever-growing detailing collection
