New to detailing - business

Hey I would like to start off by saying this is one of the best boards I have found on the net and felt compelled to join. I have been the weekend detailer for years and have also done some jobs on the side. I feel I have a pretty comprehensive list of what it will take to get started and am looking to go mobile very soon.
My questions are for the guys who do this full time.

1- How are the winter months for you dec-March?

2 - Is a generator necesary for mobile or would a higher powered inverter be enough to power Wet/Dry vacuum and whatever standard tools are needed?

3- Is it worth highering a 6-7 dollar an hour guy to help out during the busy months?

I know alot of these questions are subject to location & circumstance just asking. I am purchasing a ranger with cap to go mobile. I am starting slow but want to get the business going now so that the purchases can be made and used as a tax write off by the end of the year.

Thanks

:welcome to Detail City! I deleted your other post since its not necessary to post the same questions in multiple forums. Most people just view all the new posts by clicking the 'new posts' button anyway. Your questions will be seen regardless of where you post them. :bigups

Welcome to the forum!

I live in SoCal, so my business operates just the same from Nov-Mar as it does from Mar-Nov.

A high capacity power inverter will power basic tools like a vac or a polisher. But it will not power an extractor or anything with a heating element because of the high amp draw of those machines. You will need a robust battery or batteries to run the inverter for an extended period of time. I have a red top Optima. And it will power by inverter just fine for about 30-40 minutes without turning on my vehicle. I bought mine from http://www.invertersrus.com/. They have good info on their site to help you pic the right inverter. And whatever you do, don't buy a WalMart or department store inverter. They are junk.

Being able to detail cars is only about 30% of the skills needed to operate a successful mobile business. You also need to know how balance a business budget, market yourself in a way that you will find the customers that interest you, and find a way to keep those customers after the first detail. Make sure you create a comprehensive plan that covers all bases before going head first into the business. Good luck to ya!
