New product, student NOT pusher

Hi guys,

I am looking to do some Market Research on this product I have had some help come up with.

It is basically a torch for spotting swirls and microscope all in one.

Now this tool is valuable to myself without being an all in one, but, if it was all in the same casing and only took one hand to operate then I would be very happy indeed.

I am a keen Detailer myself, but, I am also an Honours student at University, my course is Product Design and Development.

I would basically be Designing the case from scratch (pardon the pun) and taking it all the way to the launch.

This is where you guys come in, you give me a yes or no whether you think its useful or not, any other features you would like to see included.

I aim to sell it for around 20-30 bucks.

Gimmie some feedback and any ideas too.

John.

I am in no way trying to negate the benefit of your idea. It sounds like a reasonable idea. However, you would be targeting a ridiculously small market with the product. Also, I find that a $10 halogen light helps to light up my space and find swirls all at the same time. I don't see an immediate need for an additional piece.

Best of luck!

I agree that you are cutting your target market, which is people who care for their cars, down even smaller with this product. I know everyone here wants a swirl free finish, and wants their car to look its best, but even fewer care enough to want a product to magnify the finish to spot swirls.

There just wouldn't be much demand.

I'm not sure if how many you sell or the demand is part of this project, just my insight.

I'd try to market it to vendors, not to the end-users.

Some people already use a 30X lighted magnifier the we in the States buy at Radio Shack. But I found the 30X to be a bit too much magnification for my liking.

The thing is the magnifying glass and halogen light is NOT just aimed at you guys either.

It could be used by chemists, hell even down to stamp collectors.

There have been other ideas;

A bucket similar to sonus, but, cheaper more features and did I say cheaper lol!

Roof Rack with suction for universal fitment

Dispensor for the correct amount of wash/polish

Any more ideas are welcome as I said.

JJ_ a very similar product already exists, and I believe Superior Shine carries one with him. Here's a pic (linky to the website underneath):

Ahh yes there are many on the market but one with the ability to spot swirls with Xenon light built in is not available as an all in one package.

Thanks for the heads up on that product though.

Do you mean a magnifying glass or a microscope because you've used both terms? I'm afraid you may have been beaten to it http://www.autoint.com/autostore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=32&idproduct=136.

The suction cup roof rack sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Suction cups tend to lose some of their suction after awhile. This would be made even worse by all the wind hitting a car. Just imagine the damage that could do to the car behind you if it let loose on the highway.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

If you can improve upon this existing product, which I find very awkward to use, that would spark my interest. Perhaps something along the lines of the gadget jewelers wear that goes over both of their eyes. We'll get funny looks to say the least, but I'd still be interested.

O sorry ill explain it a bit better; or try!

It is a magnifying glass with Xenon light below the magnifying glass/microscope.

It will enlarge the area you are interested in when you have hold it close to the surface, but if you take it away the swirls will show.

Basically an Xenon torch with a microscope/magnifying glass below.

Well I thought of adding all sorts but to keep the price down then I think this is a good compromise.

You get a microscope and Xenon swirl finder in one easy to use product.

Ill keep you guys up to date.

How well does Xenon work for finding swirls? I have a Xenon flashlight and always found it to be sub-par to my lahogen for finding swirls. Maybe it is due to a different focal length on my lights.

Quite a few people use this as a swirl finder on their cars some pro's use it too.

The difference between an actual xenon and an LED is night an day.

as stated prior... you've got a very limited market which means low profitability. time, $ investment, you need to do your own research, figure out your numbers, and find out if it is in fact worth it. I worked as a marketin/sales director for a couple companies and one thing I know you must need is a large market base. if that's not there then you're scrounging around for every last sale and that's not worth it.

$10-20 is a more ideal range for a product like this. For me, it's not a product I would require. I can see swirls fine either by looking at the car in the sun, or using indoor lighting be it halogen, incandescent, flourescent.

I'm not putting you down or anything, I think it's great you've got an idea and want to move forth but always make sure you do your research... not just a little... but thorough. Go talk to some retail or online vendors, see what interest there may be for that.

I'm still curious as how you're arriving at a $20-30 price point. That does seem a bit high. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Yeh but it doesn't have a microscope built in as well.

Ach Ill probably still do it for my project anyway.

It will involve some good manufacturing process and some lovely CAD drawings so thats good enough.
