New Metallic Black Paint Care

Hello friends,

I bought a new 2010 Ford Taurus with the new metallic black paint about 8 months ago. I want to give it its first wax and was wondering if someone could recommend a good wax and polish for this type of paint? I was told Black Velvet was a good product but I am old school and like carnauba wax but is this wax the thing of the past?

I want something with no white film residue in the hard to reach places so I was thinking. I use Liquid Glass on my wifes maroon Sebring but don't think I should it on black paint.

Also, is cheese cloth still a good choice for removing wax?

Thanks,

Welcome. I agree with you, nothing like a True Carnauba wax on black. Meguiars #26 is an amazing value and works perfectly on black, however it might leave a bit of white film if you get it on trim. I also like Pinnacle Souveran, however its pricey, no white residue though. Some other great choices would be Collinite 915, Fuzion and Chemical Guys 50/50. Carnauba is definitely not a thing of the past.

However if you would like a synthetic that looks like a carnauba, blackfire wet diamond is a fantastic choice.

Things have definitely progressed past cheese cloths and diapers, do some research here, there are lots of thread about choosing the right microfiber cloth.

Thank you for the reply!

I was reading a few threads here so far and I did notice one that said to polish first, then wax. On my Cadillacs I only used Liquid Glass and that appeared to be excellent of my Champaign color Seville. I have been using Liquid Glass since 1987 when I purchased my 1959 Deville.

I am going to look into some of the products you mentioned. I appreciate the good information. And I will read more about towels for removing wax and for buffing.

Thanks,

If your finish is less than perfect, polishing will bring out the maximum shine. If you have swirls and they bother you, you should polish before waxing. Before you get to the polishing though, you should look into claying the car surface. It will remove and contaminants prior to the polish step. The real route to a perfect finish is:

1. Wash (perfect your technique to eliminate scratching)

2. Clay to remove contaminants

3. Polish to create a level and optically perfect surface

4. Seal with a good wax or synthetic sealant.

You can spend days reading prior posts here and learn a lot. Don't be afraid to ask specific questions if you get stuck and can't find the answers. Good luck!
