I have never really and truly gotten very involved with detailing my cars in the past. Have had some experience long ago with compounding a faded finish (by hand), plus the normal washing and waxing. Had a relatively cheap buffer/polisher for some years that I used a number of times but that was really just to make the job easier not because I was looking for the absolute best results. Didn't really pay that much attention to which products I used nor the materials/process. But I just brought home a new Hyundai Sonata with dark blue paint (Pacific Blue Pearl) and I want to get it polished and protected to maintain a high grade finish and appearance from the start. Also my wife just traded her Hyundai Santa Fe for a 2010 Tahoe. It's in pretty good shape but I want to get on top of it and get it in the best shape possible (within reason) going forward. I plan to clay bar it before starting on any polishing/sealing/waxing.
I have a son-in-law that has been detailing his vehicles for a few years. He loaned me some of his equipment (Porter Cable 7424XP plus accessories) and supplies (Klasse, Pinnacle Signature Series II carnauba wax, etc.) to get me started. I'll get my own stuff down the road to maintain these vehicles. Looking forward to getting that deep glossy shine and protection on my car this weekend. I've just started doing a little bit of reading on this site and other similar ones and man there sure is a wealth of information available in the forums and on YouTube to help get folks like me started or to take your game to a higher level.
