New kid from Tampa

Hi Guys,

My girlfriend has a '99.5 VW Jetta. This car leaks some kind of sludge from the doors onto the lower part of the car when it gets hot outside. She keeps the car reasonably well but has been unable to remove this sludge using normal washing techniques. I am told it is some kind of anti-rust substance used to seal the doors. By this time I would guess it's at least a half-inch thick. Any suggestions on how to remove it?

Thanks!

I'd contact a dealer first to find out what the substance really is. It sounds like a manufacturing issue. If so, the work should be covered under warranty.

If it is anti corrosion material, use a product like P21s Total Auto Wash or Eimann Fabric Hi-Intensity to cut it.

its cosmoline--I'm sure that I'm spelling it wrong. It should wipe off w/ a rag. If it has gotten all hard, try softening it w/ a hairdryer. Any of the paint safe solvents work well--but goofoff seems to work best (I've used it on "snot"!)

Goof Off took the paint off of my first cars wheel wells. I am wicked scared of using that stuff on ANY surface on ANYTHING that I own.

I would try Tarminator. It removes tar, sap, bugs and most of the crud you would normally deal with.

it's true goof off is no toy--but they have a VW, and I have a VW, so I thought the paints might be similar in resisting the stuff. If you use the strong stuff, wipe w/ a damp rag so no residue is left on the paint!

I also didn't have any trouble getting the cosmoline off of my paint..so maybe tornado red is radioactive or something.

:-) I hear ya. I just thought it would be better to suggest a product that works without as much risk's you know. Better off than them coming back and saying they used it the wrong way and screwed up their paint.

I would make sure you tell them how to use it and how you used it along with expected results. I know it took the paint off my fender weels because I used too much pressure and rubbed it too long. You should of seen the look on my face man, I was pissed off to the point where I was going to order that part new but I got rid of the Saturn not too long after that happended.

Well, have fun getting that crap off your paint, once it's off I would apply some wax or better yet; sealent to make cleaning that area of the car much easier in the future.

Hey TID, I am 17 and from around the Tampa Bay Area (Weeki Wachee/Brooksville). My father passed away recently, and it is hard financially. I use to race go karts, and have always had a passion for autos. Wether it is technology, driving, or aesthetics, I have an interest in all of the auto fields. I still would like to continue racing to become a Formula One driver, but that has been put on hold for now.

I recently bought a detailing package from ProperAutoCare.com. I have enough supplies for wash, clay, polish. I recently did my car, and I plan on doing another car. The results were quite satisfying for my first time. Since income is very limited for my family and I, can anyone recommend how I might turn this passion into a job? College fees and house bills are quite daunting for a kid! :money:

I understand "Tampa" is of significance on this forum. If I could be further trained on detailing, and/or be of assistance to a current detailer, that would be awesome! My mom does not think I can turn it into a job, but I have all this equipment sitting here.

I still may need one or two more supplies to proceed with my next detailing job. I will take pictures and post them. Taking picture

Sincerely, Yamir Raj

Sorry to hear about your father :( there are several members here from the Tampa area. If I were you, I would ask Angelo (PAC) to help guide you

Best of luck on your new business, but do not quit school. This is a very hard occupation and it doesn't get any easier with time ;)

Well welcome to the forum young man. Trouble has already given you some very sound advice. Due to your financial situation and limited experience you might be able to work out something with a detailer in your area as a apprentice or helper before jumping out on your own. Nothing can replace hands on experience.Good luck in whatever path you choose.

As others have said, do not forgo your education. Work diligently at achieving your goals and success will slowly follow.

Welcome to Truth In Detailing Yamir Ra, I'm very sorry to hear about your dad. I'm always be willing to help out in questions and maybe if I find a detailer in your area willing to help in some type of training to get you started. Remember school is number 1 in my book and just do this as a part time job to help your family out.

Welcome to TID. Sorry to hear about your lost. My mother passed away when I was seven and know what its like to lose a close relative. Im 21 now. I like in Tampa bay area. Close to Raymond James Stadium. Im going to need some help with detailing some cars later this month which will be perfect timing to help you out. I would be more than happy to help in any way I can. I pay Angelo a visit every month or so to get a few things I need. Welcome to the family of TID.

Thank you everyone! Yes, school is the most important thing! I will be attending UF in the Fall or Spring. :iagree: Please do keep a look out around Tampa and Gainesville area.

SIDetailing, thank you for your offer! I may be going on vacation for a few weeks due to the tragedy. I am however very much interested! I am familiar with Tampa area, I use to commute 100miles a day just for school in Tampa.

I have yet to visit that actual PAC store, but I may do so soon. My friends want me to detail their cars as well.

First of all welcome to Truth.

Secondly, I'm sorry to hear about your circumstance.

Third, turning detailing into a business requires a goal and commitment. You are not too young to do it, as Dave Saunders (who works on mostly exotic cars and does incredible work) is close to your age.

The first thing you have to do is figure out your goals. If school is a priority, then concentrate and something easy and doable. Maybe get the basic car wash supplies and hit up office buildings looking to do car wash/waxes. Hire a couple of friends (when you drum up enough business) and make some money. Not all detailing requires expensive equipment and there is plenty of (perhaps far more) money to be made in volume.

Best

Todd

Awesome just let me know when you get back into town.

I would also like to convey my sympathy for your loss, and welcome you to TID.
You have already received a lot of great advise here, so there is not much more that I can add.
We have a very close community here, and are always willing to help each other out, so hang in there and good luck.
