New Griot's Polisher?

Sorry if someone hit this one before, but I just got a new Griot's catalog today and they have a "re-engineered and all-new" polisher. It looks a bit G110-ish, but the counterweight housing is smaller and the switch is in a different place.

Griot's Garage 6" Random Orbital - Griot's Garage

Sure looks like there are plenty of DA choices now between this, the new PC, G100, and Flex.

it looks like a knock-off the G110. maybe someone can be the guinea pig and take one for the team and try it out, but in the meantime i would stick with the tried & true G110, PC, etc...

Again 6.5" pads on a da just don't work. Notice how the mark on the backing plate stops in the vid. The only da that can spin the 6.5" pads effectively is the Flex.

The only griots polisher I'm interested in is that 3 inch one. But for the price of the polisher alone I could get a whole 3" setup for the pc including pads

even then, i would opt for the metabo instead..

Yikes, check out the minimum speed on that Metabo  :nervous2:

I gotta admit I'm tempted by the little Griot's 3" polisher..I bet I'd get a lot of use out of it. And I'm curious how well it'd work for spot correction with the Griot's orange pads and the M105/M205 combo

Legacy99- Heh heh, good on you for pointing that out; pretty bad when their video demonstrates the shortcoming of their machine!

I simply don't see how anybody gets paint corrected with the Griot's system, I really don't. Heaven knows I tried. Well, I will say that their Machine Polishes do work a lot better via Cyclo/PC 4" but that's not how they market them.

I *do* really like their orange foam machine pads though and the 3" ones should be great for individual RIDS.

Looks like the new 6” machine could be a contender. It has a 5’16” throw, like the PC, with more power. IIRC their old machine had a short throw.

Note that the Griot’s has the same speed specs as the Metabo. But the orbit’s only 1/16” (on the Metabo anyway, I don’t see a spec on the Griot’s) so it needs to run fast.

In person it looks like a knock-off of the Metabo, not an exact knock-off, but close. But I haven’t seen a production unit, only the prototype Griot’s brought out to their Demo day a while back.

pc.

What's wrong with its lowest speed? I wouldn't want it any other way.

I would use something like that for spot polishing and headlights. With the pc the only time I use anything less than speed 6 is for lsps and a 3" pad is definitely not something I would need for an lsp.

My Rigid 2610 spins like a rotary with a 6.5 inch pad on the smaller orbit setting.

wannafbody- When did you get the Rigid? Sounds like you like it a lot.

To each their own, but I use lower speeds on my PC with 3.5-4" pads. I never go over 5 and some products (esp. 1Z Pro Line) seem to work best for me at 4 or 4.5.

I would always use 6 with larger pads, but it never worked well for me with the little ones.

BUT....

Ah, jeeze, I never even considered that :o Thanks for schooling me; I just knee-jerked at the number without putting it in context.

Hmm...even it it's a knock-off, wouldn't Griot's guarantee beat the warranty that Metabo offers?

We just received the new Griots polisher and it looks like a mean machine, a lot of upgrades from the previous one!

With all the different polishers you folks offer, it'd be interesting to hear your in-house discussions about the various pros and cons :D

We are definately playing around with the new PC XP and the new Griots getting a feel for the differences and the upgrades, both manufacturers really did make some nice needed improvements. I really like that Gritos made the polisher to accomodate the standard backing plates. Makes it an option now to use different size backing plates on it and change up the pads too!

Perhaps more mixing/matching of different lines will be going on now, like using Griot's pads with other systems and so on...kinda surprising sometimes what does (and doesn't) work.

Oh, and thanks for confirming that the Griot's machine takes the standard backing plates, that *is* good news.

Sure. And that could easily be a compelling reason to go with it. Richard really stands behind his products.

But besides the fact I got my Metabo before the Griot’s was available, I’d still choose it.

For one, I have a thing for German tools.

I also try to avoid offshore knock-offs, even good ones, whenever practical. I’d rather give my money to factory workers in the US or a close (cultural/economic/ecological/military) ally. That’s a just a personal thing with me.

The 3" polisher is a bit cheaper than the Metabo version, cheap enough for me to consider getting one. Somebody buy one first and post results - if it's worth a sh!t I'll get one too.
