Hi,
New to this forum, bought a new 2012 Lexus ES350 with a brown truffle mica exterior color, snowed a few days after I picked it up brushed the car off with broom, and had scratches left all over car. Brought it to a local good detailer and he said he would get scratches out, just clear coat scratches cannot feel with finger tip, Well it look good for a while scratches appeared to be gone but after a good rain scratches are back? You guys seem to know what you are talking about, could I get a little input from you?? Thanks

Welcome to AutopiaForums!!

Yep. He glazed you. The scratches would need to be compounded/polished out to be permanently removed.

Welcome to Autopiaforums scotish1, looks like the wrong detailer has struck again. I recommend if you want to do remove those scrathes and swirls then first you should read one in the How to Guide Section and get familiar with products and how to.

But if you want just input then you can get a PC7424XP or a Griot's Garage 6" Random Orbital Polisher with 6-12 pads of different colors, like these awesome working pads ( Lake Country Hydro-Tech 5 1/2 x 7/8 Inch Foam Pads ) in the Cyan, Tangerine and Crimson pads ( 3 of each ) with the Meguiar's Ultra Cut Compound M105 and Meguiar's Ultra Fine Polish M205. Don't forget in claying the car first before using a machine first. Towels are a must like these Microfiber ones I link for you. Everyone one else will be coming in here and will be putting their input also and you will be in great hands on this forum....................:welcome:

welcome scotish1, this is a great place to learn how to do it yourself and do it right. lots of great input from experienced, talented people.

Here is a good article for basic reading: http://www.autopiaforums.com/forums...6769-detail-institute-what-paint-defects.html

When we visually remove paint defects we have two options. One we can remove them be leveling the paint surface. That is all of the paint that is higher than the deepest part of the defect is removed (like a mountain range that we chop the tops of the mountains off) so that we create a new, level surface OR we can hide them. This would be like flooding the valleys in between the mountains until the water level is equal with the peaks.

Either ways you have created a smooth appearing and level finish.

If we have removed the paint defects then the surface will stay realitively flat until it becomes scratched again. (IE you rub a brush over it again). Because modern paint systems are so scratch-senstive this happens often. By using proper washing technique you can elminate most of the causes of these scratches.

If we have filled or hidden the paint defects then the surface will look flat until the product evaporates (in our mountain range analogy the the water level subsides).

The problem is that removing paint defects is time consuming and requires skill. Filling/Hiding paint defects is fast and requires far less skill. Most production style detail shops fill paint defects because, at the price point they operator and at the wages they pay employees, it is the only way they can turn a profit. Many shops fill paint defects and don't even know they are doing it.

This is why many enthusiasts, such as yourself, have turned to polishing paint themselves. They can often do a far better job then most detail shops because they care about the quality of the finish they achieve. It is exactly why companies like Autopia-CarCare.com sell thousands of polishers at year.

Before we talk about fixing the paint defects, let's rule out that they are not new paint defects. Have you washed the car since receiving it from the detail shop?

Welcome, let us know if we can be of any assistance to you. We should be able to take care of those scratches for you.

Welcome. You came to the right place. As said you can learn to tackle this yourself. If your not inclined at least you will have the knowledge to specify what your wanting and find a good detailer.
