New DA polisher?

Hello all,

I know this has been discussed several times, but you'll have to forgive me....Ive looked at a lot of threads, done some research, but I still can't decide....

I'm looking at the griots 6in RO polisher and the Megs G110v2 DA.... Which one is best for me?

-I'm a noob, only have a POS turtle wax RO polisher...don't use it much, so I'm still a buffing noob.

-I frequently detail a black vehicle, so I don't need something that can get away from me and burn up the paint

- I also detail white cars, dark blue/light blue cars, dark green cars, my yellow truck and a tan vehicle on occasion

-I want something powerful enough to correct paint on my vehicles (every few years )

- I also want to wax with this machine.

With these things in mind, what is the best option for me? Cost isn't too much of an issue, but out of curiosity, on average, which is the Cheeper machine to own(cost of pads, ect...)

Also, is the griots machine a DA or a RO machine? I've seen it described as both.

Thanks guys!

Take a look at the new 3D polisher, sure that many will jump in given time.

Garry Dean has even done a video on this new unit.

I have a Bosch and a Porter Cable, plus two rotary buffers, considering buying the new 3D unit in the near future.

I don't think you can beat the Griots for the hobbyist detailer--it has all the power you will ever need (second only to the 3D Polisher as tested by Gary Dean), but most importantly it has a lifetime warranty so if after a few years something happens just send it back to Griots and they will repair or replace it --usually replace. RO and DA are used interchangably- they both mean the same thing when talking about polishers. BJs.com has them on sale until the end of Sept for $90 including shipping http://www.autopia.org/forum/good-deals/142370-gg6-bjs-com.html#post1516380

You'll need to get a 5" backing plate so you can use 5.5" pads which are recommended by most here. I would suggest 3D flat pads (Buff & Shine and Uber Pads are the same) as they have a recessed Velcro that offers an added level of safety for those of us new to machine polishing. I'd also suggest you look at HD UNO and HD Polish as they are very user friendly with long working times, no dusting, easy removal and no heavy oils left behind to hide defects. As someone new to machine polishing I've had fantastic results with the Griots, B&S pads and HD products with none of the problems I've read in posts from others new to machine polishing.

I can't comment on Griot's pads, since I don't use them, but others here do and they like them a lot. I personally don't like "kits", but would rather buy a polisher and everything else separately yo insure I don't get fluff items and other stuff I won't be using.

After burning through 4 GG6 units I picked up a new G110v2 this week. I know it may not have quite as much torque as the GG6, but I've not found the need to go above speed 4.5-5 on the GG6 anyway. I'm confident the G110v2 will hold up better in the long run and it has more then enough power to do the job.

ive been wanting to try the best of show wax and machine polish they include with the kit, so its no real fluff to me. Plus the included claybar does great. they run about $20 locally, so I think the extras are worth the price

how did you burn through them? I dont use my polisher often, so I dont think this would be an issue

I only detail on the weekends so it's not like I'm using them all that often. First one the shaft broke and the other units still run, but the bearings have gone bad and have so much play in them that I'm not comfortable using them on a car in fear that they will break and damage a car. That and the increased vibration is annoying. My PC 7424 is going on 7 years now and still works like new....though under powered compared to the newer DA's.

2001Ranger- IMO you won't go wrong with either the GG or the Meguiar's unit, you could probably just flip a coin.

IIRC, some people have had warranty issues when they did *not* buy the GG directly from Griot's.

FWIW, I'm no pro, but I've used/abused my GG polisher something awful for a few years now, and it's still working fine. Minimal vibration, basically still works just like new. More than I can say for my PCs!

Much to my surprise, I do OK with 6" pads. I generally subscribe to "!you need small pads to do correction!" but with the GG I can usually just use the 6" ones.

I like the GG orange polishing pads, but they're not aggressive enough for really serious correction. They *might* not be soft enough for final polishing on certain paints, but I've never had a problem with that.

I also like the GG red waxing pad, and mine last forever.

I *DO NOT* like GG's BOS wax. Yuck. I tried and tried and tried to like it, went through many bottles of the stuff, but finally wised up.

I haven't used their Machine Polishes for a while, so maybe they've reformulated them again (I used...I think maybe three different generations of them). The ones I've used weren't anything great and I'd rather use other stuff.

But I do understand the "one stop shopping" appeal.

Rasky...have you tried warrantying any of them?

I did on the first one. Planning to on the others as well but it's still a bit of a pain IMO.

think Im gonna pick up these 3 from BJ's.com

Griot's Garage 6" Machine Polish and Wax Kit - BJ's Wholesale Club

Griot's Garage 6" Polishing Pads, 3-Pk - BJ's Wholesale Club

Griot's Garage 6" Waxing Pads, 3-Pk - BJ's Wholesale Club

are the extra pads worth the $50? they seem to be the cheapest there....anyone know of a cheaper place to get them?

From a long term cost standpoint you'd be better off with 5.5" pads--a six pack of most 6" pads (not Griots) is $50--a six pack of 5.5" pads $35 so on the first six pack you save almost enough for the 5" backing plate. Also, there is a much wider selection of aggressiveness levels once you move outside of Griots pads so easier to fit the pad to the situation. BTW The kit you show is available on Amazon from time to time for $99.00 including shipping so this isn't such a good deal. On the other hand I've never seen the stand alone GG6 for less than $80 so BJs $90 isn't a bad deal.

Can you link me to this kit on amazon? The only one I see is $199....quite the price increase from 130$

As I mentioned it's $99.00 from time to time--you have to watch the Gold Box Deals. The stand alone GG6 is on sale at BJs.com until the end of the month for $90. If you put your own kit together you can pick and choose what you'll need most.

Example

GG6---$90

5" BP---15

12- 5.5" pads 70 (for instance 4 Orange or yellow, 4 Green, 2 Blue or Black, 2 red for LSPs) this is not excessive and just an example

HD UNO 20--Medium Compound

HD Polish 25

Clay Magic 20

HD POXY 20-Hybrid Sealant/Wax

$260
