New Cellphone service...

I dont know if any of you all can answer this question but I might as well ask anyways. i'm about to move from VA to Myrtle Beach, SC and am going from Verizon to Nextel. I am currently in a family plan with my mom and bro but my mom wants to give my dad my cellphone so she can call my dad every night since he isn't moving down to SC until September when he retires from his job and go ahead and get me a Nextel phone. If I were to go ahead and get a Nextel up here in VA, would I be able to transfer my plan to make it work in Myrtle Beach? What I mean is, could I change my phone number or at least the area code so I would get better service down there? Sorry to be confusing but its hard to explain what I'm trying to say using technical cellphone terms.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. Verizon and Nextel are both carriers. If I understand correctly, you are currently on Verizon but want to switch to Nextel. If that is the case, there is no plan to transfer. You will just need to sign up for a new plan in SC with Nextel. On the other hand, if you want to stay with Verizon's plans but buy a "push-to-talk" phone, then you can use Verizon's EZmove service to transfer your plan to a SC area code. Nextel would not be involved in this second scenario.

Find out who is/are the best carrier in that area. You might be surprised how some excellent providers in some areas perform absolutely poorly in others. Ask around locally to find out what carriers people are on and how they like them and you can also check in on a forum like Howardforums.com to research more.

maybe in simpler terms....I want to go ahead and buy a Nextel phone here in VA since I'm giving my Verizon phone to my dad but I'm moving to SC. What do I have to do when I get to SC besides getting the billing address changed if I even have to do that?

Ah, now I understand your situation. For many carriers, rate plans (pricing/minutes/peak/off-peak/etc.) will vary widely from region to region. Go to the Nextel website and check out the plans available for your current zip code and the one you will be moving to. See if there is any difference. Then, consider whether or not it will benefit you to have a specific area code. (Who will be calling you on your cell phone in SC? Will those people need to pay long distance charges? Will those calls generally come during certain hours of the day or certain days of the week?) Once you have that information, you can decide whether you want to keep your VA Nextel phone number or change it to a SC number. If you want your bill to be sent to your SC address, then you should submit a change of address.

Bill D is correct in his advice too. I'm a long time cell phone user (back to 1990, I think). I've had contracts with Bell Atlantic, Metrophone, Sprint, Comcast, ATT, Verizon, and now Cingular. If you haven't traveled much or moved to different parts of the country before, you may be surprised at just how strong or spotty coverage can be. If you know exactly where you'll be moving in SC, you can ask each carrier in the area to show you their coverage maps (the street level detailed ones, not the generic ones they post on their websites). Make sure you'll have decent coverage before you sign any long term contract.
