New car paint

Well I did a search and about 5,000 posts come up under New Car paint, and I don't want to spend the rest of my life sifting through it... So on to my question :)

My car is 1.5 months old, washed every weekend, how do people feel about polish and waxing the new cars, and is it bad for the paint?

Just want some pro detailing advice :D

Clay it first -- before you even think about polish and wax. Click on the "Learn" icon first, and read David's article. Then get Mothers or ClayMagic (available at Autopzone, PepBoys, etc.) or Autopia's clay kit. I'll see if I can find some other relevent threads for you later.

Most important: Learn how to wash and dry so you don't introduce swirl marks. (Most of these are -- sadly -- self-inflicted.) Again, check the "Learn" button.

There's also a claying article in the Hall of Fame that you might want to check out. There is a new version of the Autopia eBook due soon, but even the old one is full of great information and covers the "basics" very well.

Polishing with something abrasive is something that is only done "as needed" usually, although some waxes work best if you do at least a light polish before hand. Yes, wax your car. ;)

As Lynn said, good washing and drying technique is important to prevent future damage.

By all means, clay the finish first! You will remove all the "rail dust" from shipment, provided your car did not go the the dealerships "swirl mark and scratch application department". You should get experienced with working with clay and how well it improves your finish B4 you polish/wax.

You can use a glaze, which is a very fine polish usually having some type of oils or carnuba in it. If you want to use just carnuba waxes: S100, Souveran, Megs #26, Zymol, Mothers etc etc... you could use Megs #7 Show car Glaze. Or 3M PIII Finishing Glaze, or other mfg glaze. There are so many and all of us can recommend some type of glaze over another.

If you choose a sealant, Zaino, BF, etc, DO NOT USE A GLAZE WITH OILS/CARNUBA. Sealants need to bond to bare paint.

Wash your car with a good quality car wash soap. Buy yourself a Calif Water Blade and a waffel weave MF towel. This will dry it quickly and not damage the finish. ALso look into a good wash mitt.

Check out the Autopia detail guide.

Go and enjoy your car.

Regards,

Deanski
