New 7424 user, question on first time use for waxing

I'm finally getting a 7424 with the pad kit form autogeek. Porter Cable 7424 & Foam Pad Kit - Car Buffer

I'm kind of nervous about using the more agressive pads and polishes until I get a good feel for it, and can try on another car first. In the mean time, I would like to use it to apply non-abrasive filling polishes, sealants, and waxes on my car. I've heard the white pads are the softest is this true? Which sort of pads should I use for this, and which speed on the 7424?

Sorry for the noob question, but is hologramming possible to cause with a soft foam pad and non agressive product without applying lots of pressure and a higher speed? I plan on starting out at the slower speeds first.

Is there any other pads or items I should purchase for what I would like to do?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to make sure that the first time use is an enjoyable experience.

White and orange pads are goof proof on the PC. Stick with a mild swirl removing polish and you won't hav any issues. The PC won't hollogram.

If you are apprehensive about using it, by all means start using it by applying a wax or sealant...with that being said, though there is no reason to be nervous, it a very easy machine to use.

If you are referring to Lake Country pads then the Grey or Blue are softer finishing pads and the white is a polishing pad.

No, but the slowest I'd use is 3 - for applying waxes/sealant. 4.5-6 for polishes. Any slower then that for polishing and you won't break dwon the polish and will result in "hazy" paint.

I have a section on my webpage covering "How long do I work the polish for/how many passes before removing the residue?" and "How to determine the right polish & pad combo" that might help.

Here is the link:

I also have all the videos I did that are on Youtube on my site as well...with better resolution.

Good Luck!

Even when using a filler polish with no abrasive and waxes such as Meguairs products? Right now I apply everything by hand, and let the polish and wax haze up to where it remove easily. Wouldn't a PC with with a lower speed a no cut pad be as gentle as hand waxing? With filler polishes and waxes, I've never really heard of having to break them down, only on abrasive polishes. I just want to use it now to spead polishes and waxes to save time over doing it by hand.

Do you know how many orbits per minute speed 3 is on the PC? Is speed 3 comparable to the one speed oribtal buffers that you can find at home depot or sears?

Yes, a PC with a finishing pad and non abrasive products is as gentle as by hand.

Right, sorry I meant 4.5-6 for abrasive polishes to be broken down...not waxes/sealants.

I apply wax/sealant on speed 3-4 with no pressure making sure to apply only a thin coat.

I know the range for a PC is 2500-6000opm and if I remember right that 1-2 is 2500 and 2750 and 3-6 = 3000-6000opm, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Is it comparable to a Ryobi or Craftsman for apply waxes/sealants...probably, but these machines don't offer the different grades of foam pads and backing plates that area available with the PC.

Thanks for the help so far everyone. I'll satrt out with the grey pads included in the kit.

Is there any other kind of pads I should pick up, or anything else for the PC? Are the pads in the kit included any good, or should I look at another brand?

They are Lake Country pads in that kit and IMO are some of the best pads available.

It looks like you have orange, white, blue and grey...that is a great start. I'd use those and get comfortable with the PC before investing in other pads.

Good luck!
