I have been playing with my UDM and have been using a 5-in backing plate with 5-in pads.

If you look at every DA demo video, they are always using it on a large flat surface and working in square sections.

You have to be careful under side mirrors and on the rear plastic bumpers were there is a 90 degree transition. There are details (creases or steps) that offer challenges to get good polishing action

How do most handle this? Switch to a larger pad and use the edge to get under these sections or use a more rounded pad and polish on the edge? I cannot polish on the edge with my LC CCS pads. Polish by hand - oh my?

You still have two of them...your hands:D

You have to realize that any machine is limited as to what areas you can work in...corners, under mirrors, lower bumpers, etc...are areas that you will have to do by hand...that's what I am doing.

I agree with Dave on using the ole hands to get into tight spots. You might also be able to finagle a 4" pad into some tight spots as well.

Using your hands and a pd works great, I have a bunch of 4" pads that in tight spots I just hold with my hand and apply pressure as needed...

Plus those area see the least amount of direct sunlight, no one normall bumps in to them or runs their hands over it, places packages on them. they do get dirty but not as much as lowwer pannels.. Anywas what i'm trying to say is normally they do not get AS marred has other pannels and there for are easier to polish by hand

I use the 4 inch pads on my BMW as it works fine on the smaller car and can get in tighter areas and sculpted trim. I can use the bigger pads on the hood, roof and trunk, but have to change pads...
