Need tips for drying damp carpet

I did a Mercury Mountaineer a couple days ago. The carpet was so filthy I had to get it pretty wet to get it clean. I got up everything I could with the shop vac, but it was raining out and didn't dry all the way. Now it smells like a wet dog (this truck usually has 2 black labs in the back, so no surprise).

So right now it's out in the sun, windows down, sunroof open, mats out.

What else can I do to get it dried out and remove the musty smell?

I'm thinking a fan in there should help, or what about putting a dehumidifier in the back cargo area overnight with all the windows closed up?

Once it's dry, should I sprinkle on some baking soda and leave that for a few days and then vacuum?

Just some thoughts I'm having, but want some advice before I ruin anything....

Wish I had a $1300 extractor, but I gotta make do.

I would re-vacuum as much of the water out of the carpet, then use a fan to finishthe drying process. If it is just slightly damp, you can use a hair dryer to finish up.

Sam's club has a product that I use for dog ordor called ordor ban. You can mix the product with your cleaner or mix the product with water and hand spray.

When I have vac and the carpet is still damp then I use a leaf blower to fluff and final dry. Sometimes after I have cleaned and vac and I need a clean smell then I will mist with ordor ban and blow dry with the leaf blower. Of course this is after my wet vac has gotten all the water up it can extract.

good luck

Atldave, I'm almost embarassed to ask such a stupid basic question ... but ... did you try blotting it dry? When I have to do what you described, I'll then put a thick cotton bathtowel down on the carpet, press hard to absorb moisture ... and that seems to help. (And, mind you, as a transplanted Atlantan, I DO KNOW the humidity problems you're dealing with!) :nixweiss

Can you rent one of those carpet dryers?
