Hello Everyone and thanks for the wonderful answers to some of my detailing questions. I have a few more questions for my fellow autopians out here. Since I am new to this detailing business, I need some very good advise on undercarriage preping, as well as the frame rails and wheel wells.

Well here it goes, I have a 01 Toyota Tundra 4x4 SR5 with a 6" lift kit. I have 35" Tires and Mickey Thompson Beadlock Wheels on it.

My problem is this!!

I really love detailing my own car and the body and such comes out pretty good, but found out here it probably can be alot better with the proper prepping procedures. I will incorporate that in my next detailing session when it warms up around here.

Back to problem. After cleaning the car, my frame rails look terrible, ie. surface rust orange discolorization and just overall looking quite ratty. From the rear perspective, the axle and pumpkin are very orangey if that is a word, and dirty and bland in color. I just cannot stand it, the udercarriage the way that it is.

I would like some suggestions on what I can use or spray on the wheel wells and the rear axle to give it that showroom look again. The truck is used sometimes on gravel roads but not much of the time. So would like a product that cleans up well but not overbearing gloss.

I stopped at Ziebart today and they said they could soundproof it rustproof it and make it look really nice. The coin is quite high for this service. They started saying they are going to drill my doors and stuff got nervous. The truck is in great condition.

After reading fellow Autopians remarks in regards to Ziebart, I don't think I want to go down that road.

Please help me with any products you think will meet my needs in regards to this. To bring the underbody and wheels wells back to showroom condition if that is possible.

Thanks again you guys for all your help. I have a appt scheduled for Monday next week at Ziebart.

For my truck (2000 F-250) I researched all the rustproofing and what not (ie line-x, rhinolining, all of them!) and decided that for the money it wasn't really worth it. The fact of the matter is, the underside of the truck is going to be barraged (sp?) with road debris no matter what, line-x and all those will eventually chip... Instead, I went to Caterpillar (the heavy equipment) and bought some of their rust inhibitor primer and semi gloss black... People still ask me if it's a new truck whenever they see it. Yes it does chip, but it's so easy to just touch up with the black semigloss... Also, it was $65 total for primer, paint and reducer (a gallon of each) The only problem you may run into is finding a compressor and spray gun... but if you have that, and are interested, I'd be happy to share some of the details and dos and don'ts with you. :wavey I'll try to get some pics of it this weekend too if you're interested.

I have a tundra 4x4 also, an am coincidently cleaning my underchassis today.( I am on dinner break now). My chassis is not bad at all and some people would call it clean but it bugs me, so maybe my advise wont be as helpful to you but here it goes.

Start out by rinsing with a powerwasher(very well), then I pull it in my garage and get down on a creeper with a old wash mit in one hand, a damp rag in the other, and purplestuff diluted 10:1. Just spray, scrub, and wipe. Later on I will coat the undercarrage with AA diluted 5:1 to make it shiny.

The problem I have most is cleaning the leaf spings in the rear. I get them ok by normal people standars, but not up to autopian standards.

Hope this helps,

Brandon

I would highly recc. Bill Hirsch Miracle Paint. You can paint right over all the rust. It will leave a nice semi-gloss coating. You could easily do two coats on your truck over the course of a weekend.
