Need Pro's opinions on full paint correction pricing and a few other questions

Hi...

I have a newly acquired 1990 Porsche Carrera 4... single stage guards red paint.

It has a slight pinkish hue (oxidation) some minor swirls and RIDS, overall though, for a 21yo car, the paint is in good shape.

I've been to 3 shops in the Denver area and the estimates for full paint correction (just paint, no interior work) have been 250-350, 450-550, and 1,800-2,000

The highest bid was from a first class full auto restoration shop who restores cars from hemi cuda's to '54 Gullwing Mercedes, to 1952 Ferrari's.

Their work is incredible, but pricey.

The other 2 are well established shops in Denver.

First question...

Is $100.00 hr and 18hrs to do the work seem completely out of line or just on the high side?

Question two...

One of the lower priced shops when I asked do you use a paint gauge? said "no, because I don't use products that remove paint, only feed it"

Sounds like BS to me, especially when even the least aggressive compound/pad combo on single stage guards red paint will still turn the pad red.

Question 3...

Can anyone recommend a shop who does amazing work in the Denver/Colorado Springs areas?

PM me if necessary

Thanks in advance...

Question 1 - 75-100 for high quality work is not out of the norm. Ever talk to some of the highly regarded paint correction specialists what they charge? some are by the hour, and some are by the job, but most are around 1500-2000 for a full correction job

question 2 - stay away from this shop! You cant relevel paint without removing some of it! Paint that old, better get it read with a PTG for sure!

Question 3 - http://www.theintriguedetail.com/

Great advice from Eric, especially for question #2. And even though you're here asking questions, it's obvious your BS flag went up too. It's nice to see people starting to educate themselves on paint correction and high-end work. Good luck!

i would ask to see some of their work , or a test spot on your vehicle , or any vehicle to have an idea of what improvement they made and if they know what they doing.

on porsche from my experience so far 2 step correction goes up to 95+% correction that is a swirl free finish. as time frame it takes me between 7-10+ hours for exterior only.

it all depends how "full" the finish it has to be , if you chase every single rids and scratch , than it may take an extra 2-5 hours....but in the same time you have a higher risk by dealing with extra cut from original paint. plus some scratches it may be too deep to be removed so you have to live with them or repaint.

as price in my case i charge by package and is between 40-65 /hour for polish , and 30-50 /h for wash and wax , it all depends of the condition of the vehicle , color , size , time , sometimes weather /if extreme cold or hot may affect my productivity.

What Cosmin said is great advice based on my experience. Be happy with 95%. I've found the 'other side of perfect' when trying to get that last, deepest flaw out of the paint. It's a sickening feeling when you realize that you've gone through the outer layer of paint. The guards red on your 964 should look incredible once it's corrected. Be sure to post pictures. Good luck.
