Need pad/polish recommendations

Prelude: I have promised a review of this stuff for a while. Took me a while to find the product, and I really wanted to test it on the black Porsche, which, for one reason or another, hasn't been convenient lately. However I had some free time today, so I decided to give it a go on my anthracite M5. Now while I'm waiting for the Gold Class wax to cure, here goes:

A word about color: Anthracite is a metallic gun metal gray. All metallic paints scatter light more than non-metallic paints, making it much more difficult to see swirls. (This is a good thing, unless you WANT to see them! You guys with silver metallic cars have the best color for hiding imperfections. You don't know what you're missing! ;) ) The bad news is that doing this test on my anthracite car made it very hard for me to discern small differences between this product and others.

I applied the product with a polishing (medium) pad and the PC orbital. I started with the orbital on 4-5, however by the end I ran it wide-open (#6) - I can see no disadvantage to this - just more work in less time. I used the "work it until it is as dry as you can get, firm pressure to start, diminishing pressure as it dries" technique.

I also applied some 3M SMR (dark finish) next to it using the same technique. In terms of swirl mark reduction, they appear to be about the same. I think the SM2.0 leaves a higher lustre, but that was close too. Applied with this technique, BOTH products were a breeze to buff out, but the edge went to the SM 2.0 here. One swipe with the MF wipe - and it looked great with no trace of residue or oils.

I think the SM2.0 is very, very similar (if not identical?) to Scratch-X, (I will ask Meguiar's and find out) which I also tried.

None of these products removes heavier swirls. I still have plenty of scratches I can see under perfect lighting. In a few areas, I went to work first with Finesse-IT II white. This most definitely got rid of more swirls. As proof of the difference between black and anthracite, though, I couldn't see any of the haze Finesse-IT left - but I know it is there because I could see it so clearly on the black car. I followed it up with SM 2.0 anyway.

Conclusion: initial report is good. It is certainly a big improvement over Meguiar's original SMR, which I didn't care for much. At a minimum this is a second source for a 3M SMR-like product - maybe one day it will be easier to find. I THINK it leaves a slightly better gloss, and it is the easiest product to buff out I've used. (The Finesse-IT II, by the way, creates HUGE friction when you try to buff it out. I used some detail spray to lubricate the MF wipe - this really helped. )

I will post again when I do a black car. A friend is bringing his badly swirled black Ferrari 360 Modena over next week for some TLC - I may get to that before the Porsche. And I get to drive it!!! Can't wait. :D

Carguy-

Any news yet on the Meguiar's SMR 2.0 on a black car? I have a red Corvette which has some haze on it left by 3M SMR, and since I should be receiving my PC polisher tomorrow, I'd like to try some Meguiar's SMR 2.0 (which I've found locally) on the haze.

The car should be washed first before evaluating results as the oils hide minor scratches.

Question for you....how did you allow your porche to get so scratched up!?

...and here's what they said:

<em class='bbc'>Both #9 and #9 2.0 are non abrasive so both will be safe. The materials in the 2.0 simply work more efficiently. If you have a choice between the two of them, go with the 2.0 for better results.[/i]

I could understand if they said "mildly abrasive," but "non-abrasive?"

Meguairs Swirl Free Polish from the Body Shop Professional Line is even better.

I am glad to see they have improved upon #9 with the new Mirror Glaze Swirl Remover. :up

As an update...my PC 7424 arrived today and I attacked my 3M SMR haze and a few other swirls with it and the Meguiar's #9 2.0. I have one word...awesome!!! It <strong class='bbc'>totally[/b] got the haze out and there's not a single swirl left (my swirls were very mild). I'm so excited...I was beginning to lose hope.

I have some 3M SMR but haven't yet tried it with my new PC. I was less than satisfied when applying the 3M SMR by hand on my red 'Vette, though.

As someone who has been terribly disappointed with Meguiar's #7, its good to hear that they have a better product out now. Good info.

DETAILKING,

I know Greg from the M5 board and any scratches or swirls he is talking about are very minor as I have seen numerous pictures of the Porsche being detailed. Greg is extremely fastidious and intense with everything he tackles. I take his advice and recommendations very seriously.

Great board here! I can thank Greg (of course).

Take care,

Chris

I've been trying to help our neighbor keep her new Mazda CX7 in new condition for the last six-eight months. Today, I noticed that it has a couple of swirls and light scratches on it. I'm going to clay the car because it has caked on bug guts that didn't come out with ONR and a Zep Citrus presoak.

My question, or rather my questions are, which has more cutting power, 205 or 85rd? Will a green pad be to rough or should I use a white pad only? Usually I would go with the least aggressive combo and go up from there, but I'll only have access to the car for a couple of hours.

Thanks, guys.

Rusty.

Remember most Mazda's had a hard clear coat on them so if your going to use M205 which has more power then 85rd. Try going with the white pad first because the green pad is almost like a white pad IMO ( as long their from PAC ). You might have to move up to M105 with a orange pad to remove those swirls and very minor scratches on it.
