Need new pads

Don

I've had my PC for several years now and my original set of Lake Country variable contact pads are about shot except for the black finishing pads. Now I need to get all new ones, but it seems they don't make the VC pads anymore. I have a 6" backing plate on my PC and it seems that everyone is using the 5" plates now. Plus it seems that pad choices are much greater than when I first bought my pc.

All these new variables are making my brain hurt. Should I switch to a 5" plate and go with the 5.5"-6.5" pads, or stay with my 6" plate and use 7" pads? Which pads are likely to gove me the most durability? I do my own car frequently and typically a half dozen or so cars throughout the summer so using a pad that only lasts 5 or 6 details is a waste for me as I don't make enough money detailing to constantly buy new pads as most of the money goes to help with bills & put gas in my car.

Any suggestions?

I briefly tried some of the larger pads (i.e. 6.5") when I first got my PC7336 (essentially the same as the v1 7424; not the XP), but the performance was disappointing. I typically don't like to use anything larger than 5.5" on my PC and really prefer 4" pads for correction in that application. I found that anything larger makes the head easier to stall. I now have a Flex 3401 that I use for most of my correction needs (with larger pads) but I will still use my PC (and the smaller pads) for tighter areas.

You're right about the newer pads that have been introduced more recently. Frankly, I've been curious myself but just haven't spent the time getting familiar with some of the new technologies/systems. I still use the dozen or so LC CCS pads that I have had for quite some time (several details on 3 of my own cars and a couple family/friends). It wasn't until recently that I saw the need to replace some of them so I will be in the same boat as you pretty soon (although I may just stick with what I know).

Don,

I would also highly suggest 5.5" pads. Lake Country has a great selection of 5.5" pads and their newer HydroTech are a great addition to the already wide variety of pads. You can see all the pads here... Buffer Pads Products - Detailed Image

While I mostly use the Flex 3401 with these pads, I use this backing plate when using the 5.5" pads on the PC... Meguiar's Professional DA Polisher Backing Plate W67DA - 5" | Detailed Image

The 4" pads are great for tight places or for spot correction and they cut VERY well with an aggressive polish and an orange pad.

Hope that helps!

I have a PCxp and recently went with a Megs 5" backing plate.

This is recommended by Megs for using DA MF discs and D300.

I purchased

1) Megs 2 pack DA MF cutting

1) Megs 2 pack DA MF Finishing

1) Megs 16oz D300 Correction Compound

6) 5.5" Lake Country flat pads

[ 2) Orange 2) White 1) Black 1) Blue ]

I'm happy with the choice.
