I'm trying to perfect my technique, so please bare with me.
I'm using a Neiko rotary buffer for all steps, with a wool pad for compounding and foam (polishing and finishing) for polishing and waxing.
First, I compound the deep scratches by applying the compound directly to the painted surface then swearing with the pad before running the machine. After rubbing, I spur the pad and run the machine again to remove the residue.
Then, I lay a line of polish longways across the panel (one panel at a time), move the foam pad over the line (with the machine off) to spread the polish and absorb it into the pad, then run the machine at 1.5-2 (about 1000, 1500 RPM). I again spur the pad and run the machine again to remove residue.
For waxing, I use the same method above to apply liquid wax, or apply paste wax directly to the pad and run the machine on the panel until a thin, even coat is applied. To remove the residue, I use a clean, dry microfiber bonnet over a wool pad for cushioning.
My problem is, when I'm done, my car is basically one big swirl mark. What am I doing wrong?
I have a Porter Cable DA, but I use that mainly for scrubbing carpets...the brush head has to be unscrewed from the spindle (no Velcro), so I'd like to be able to just leave that be and use the rotary for paint cleaning and waxing...but is there just some things you CAN'T use a rotary for?
PS, any input would be appreciated, but please don't tell me to forget the rotary and stick to the PC unless the rotary can't be used. I'd rather use the rotary for paint cleaning if possible.
Thank you!
