Need Big Help

So I bought an ex cop car and the PD painted over all the logo's and police insignias with paint. I'm not sure if it's latex or enamel but it's house paint, so does anyone know how I can take it off?

First off welcome to the site from Sonoma County CA

Can you post some pics of this?

Questions I would like to ask

how long has this paint been on the car?

How do you know its house paint?

If it is most house paints are water based and will come off with lacquer thinner but would still like to see the answers to the other questions...before I suggest you take LT to the car...

Are the emblems under the painted area?

First Welcome :howdy:

Kinda of odd that they painted over them unless like Jared says and they were painted on, but if you do remove it will that cause other issues? There is a reason that it is covered or removed.

They're decals from what I've seen. I'm not trying to impersonate a cop especially here in NYC where cops love to stick inanimate objects in peoples rectum. I went today to a detail shop and one of the workers said he could probably take it off but if he can't I'm gonna have to get it repainted and I have no money to spend on a paint job.

Get the paint off the decals...there are some good suggestions to do this...since you don't care about the decal...removing the paint might ruin the decal...no big deal...then as suggested, get a heat gun an lift an edge up..and keeping the heat at the decal you can start to peel it back this might take some time but it will peel off...then to remove the adhesive..two things...goo gone or 3M adhesive remover...the later of the two will be available at any hobby or crafts store

Ok but I don't think I made myself clear. The decals where painted over with house paint. I can take it off but I'm still going to have paint on the car.

Do you have any pics of the car. It would help to see what the problem is and a way to go about tackling it

No I was clear on what you posted originally....to take off the house paint...lacquer thinner will do that...but ruin the decal in the process...it also will not harm the cars paint that much...nothing that can't be polished out...once you have the house paint off then you can use the heat gun to peel back the decal...then follow what I posted above...the original paint under the decal maybe brighter than the rest of the car...but if you polish the whole door...it should blend in OK

Do you have any shots that are further back?

I agree sorry for being such a pain but to really understand what we are dealing with it would be good to see some a few feet from the car...showing the house painted area and the rest of the cars paint..and if you can see the decal under

This suggestion is probably going to stir up some controversy, but....
The paint used by sign painters on commercial vehicles appears to be very similar to house paint.
The company I worked for used Easy Off oven cleaner to remove the lettering from their vehicles when they sold them. Spray it on, let it dwell until the paint you are removing starts to run and wash it off.
It works. Obviously, a quick polishing afterwards was needed to make it look good, but it was more to make the paint blend than correct any damage from the oven cleaner.
Try it on a small area and see how it affects the paint you want to get rid of, but you don't have a lot to lose.

:wow::jawdrop:
I've seen the cover up the markings but never a butcher job like that one.

Sorry to say you may be better off going to Macco and getting a paint job, there is alot of work there to try and remove it :(

That was an NYPD car? Doesn't look like it.
