Need better clay - I think

I clayed for the first time yesterday, and it was a disaster. It was really hot out, and I parked in the shade to avoid extra heat, but my clays kept melting in my hands. I pushed through anyways.

I used Zymol's clay, and the Meguiar's clay found in the kits OTC. I could not find any clay sold ala cart, just those kits that have products in them that I don't want.

I think my car needs something more aggressive. I don't know how mild those two clays are relatively, but they can't be that strong.

I could buy an aggressive clay online, but I could also try the Ultima pseudo-clay product that has that weird bar instead of clay. Has anyone tried that? If so, is it easy to use, and how does it compare to real clay?

And I'm not even sure if I need to clay again. It's a 4 year old car that's never been clayed before, but for all I know the paint itself has an issue and what I'm feeling isn't debris, so I guess I need that answered too.

Those clay you mention are known as "fine" clays, just try passing them 2 times instead of one pass. OTC clays are usually fine grades to safeguard the retail consumer from screwing up their paint.

Medium to heavy grades will most likely cause marring and require a polish after using and are not usually sold to the retail public. Sonus used to sell a gray medium clay which is now discontinued because it was marring peoples' car too much for safe use.

The clay "block" you are referring to has been spoken highly of in terms of performance, but leaves quite a bit of marring. Another thing you *could* try is a decontamination kit from FK or ValuGuard.

Yeah, on Ultima's website it costs 38.00. I got it for 26.99 AND an extra 10% off. That's a huge bargain when you consider they say it's enough for 25 cars, and if you drop it, you can just rinse it off.
