black BMW M3 - out from the body shop - now has orange peel owner wants removed.

what should my game plan be?

I will see the car tomorrow, then detail it wednesday, but here is what I am thinking pre-inspection

wash

wetsand with 1500 - 2500 - 3000

m105 - wool

sip - foam

FPII - finishing

sound like a plan?

I'd buy a DA sander and a box of 3M 1500 and 3000 grit Trizact sandpaper and go to town. It will drastically save you time and come out better than by hand.

I second the DA use , hand sanding for spot correction yes whole panels oh no.

BTW why did the body shop not sand to match texture to OE panels? did they the drop the ball.....

Keep your panels wet, and watch the edges and contours where the DA could burn through. In fact, just tape off the last .5" of your edges to avoid any damage.

A DA is great for large, flat areas like hoods, roofs, doors. Sand by hand in tighter spots, and don't sand at all in any spot you can't buff in.

Absolutely agreed 150%. Do not attempt to wetand an entire panel by hand, you will be kicking yourself in the butt for not getting a DA sander. As Auto Concierge noted, hand sanding is great for spot correction, not for whole panels. Not to mention, the results will be much better with a DA.

apparently...I am waiting for him to swing it by for me to look at, and I will take some pics. I was thinking from what his roommate said that it was just a panel, which I can do by hand. But, if its a whole panel, or the whole car, Ill send him on his way back to the body shop to have them sand it out, then I'll do the paint correction. I dont have the room or the space for a compressor and a sander (live in an apartment/condo with a garage too small to take a car into)

M3 coupe, whole back end needs to be sanded down and polished. I am going to do a test section for him tomorrow, but I have a feeling its going to go back to the body shop. I estimated about 10 hours for the sanding of the back half and a 3 step on the whole car. it has a whole lot of bodyshop damage all over...swirl marks, holograms, OP

I told him I couldnt just do the back half and that I would need to do the whole car to make it look right...

well, i told him to swing it back by the body shop and that is what he already did. They are going to own up to it and fix it for him, then I get to come in and clean up with shotty detail work with a real detail!

I think that once I get a house with a "DETAIL" garage, then I will take on larger sanding jobs like this one would have been. Right now I just don't have the space for it!

i hope the body shop doesnt F it up. if they sent him packing the first time with out sanding it down, they might not have the proper knowledge to do that. post your results and let us know if they used water based paint. i heard it was tough as nails to buff out after sanding.
