Nalgene Aerosol Spray Bottle

I have looked at the book from BMW but still can't figure out what the correct tire pressures should be. The front and rear tires are different and the book mentions this but is not really clear what the pressures should be. The front and rear are both at 30psi at the moment, but I think the rear should be more??

Check on the doorjamb of the driver's door; most (maybe all) cars have a tag that shows vehicle weight, build date/location, and front and rear cold inflation pressures. If it's not on the doorjamb, it may be on the edge of the door . . .

Hope this helps,

Tort

Ok, from the way see it, the front tires get 30 psi and the rear get 35 psi with a normal load.

The problem is they show pressures for all different tire options and then they say for the mixed (front and rear) the pressure is 3 psi less for both front and rear. The chart on the door seems to confirm this. I think...

go at least 32 in the front and 35-36 in the rear. My BMW M3 gets

33-34 in the fronts and 36 in the rear from 17" inchers.

A few in bimmer.org recommends higher pressure in Front than rear (eg. 34F/31R) to dial out the understeer in your SP (staggered) tire setup.

If you notice some understeer than shift more pressure to the front tire.

I (330i SP) switched from 33F/36R to 34F/31R. Handling is a bit more neutral but I suffer ~1mpg drop in gas mileage.

Will try 33F/R just to compare.

Search bimmer.org E46 forum for non-detailing related posts for your bimmer. You won't be disappointed. Hang around here for the BEST detailing forum you can find.

If you run the rears higher than the front you will be promoting understeer. What profile are the tires? 30 psi seems low for 17" tires\wheels, I have 215\40\17 Yokohamas all around and through trying different configurations have settled with 42 in the front and 38 in the rear and have removed a lot if not most of the understeer. The ride isn't harsh and I've found no noticeable wear any where on the front in the 6k miles they've been on the car. The pressures are higher than what Volvo recommends for 17" tires but it's what works best for me. I guess you have to find what works best for you and that may be different than what BMW recommends but you might want to keep understeer in mind as you experiment if you like spirited cornering:D

I read up on understeer, and they recommend adding 2 to 3.5 psi to the front tires if that happens. So far I haven't noticed any problems with steering, but I really haven't put it through the paces in cornering. Those are the BMW recommended pressures, but will experiment according to these principles and see if there is much difference. Thanks

2 to 3.5 psi delta P might be sufficient, I ended up with 4 as a comprimise between the point at which the tires started to break away without marking up the sidewall while trying to eliminate the understeer, during cornering. You might find that 2 psi is good for you. If nothing else you should get a good feel for your cornering limitations. Volvo's recommendations, (via the data plate in the door jamb) are very similar to what you quoted but it may depend more on the actual sidewall height per tire. IMHO;)

Billray:

Just to answer your q. about profile the 330i SP has 225/45/17x7.5" Front and 245/40/17x8.5" Rear.

The staggered setup promotes understeer a bit I believe.

I wonder if the slight understeer is somehow linked to the Dynamic Traction Control system. Sounds logical to me.... I think understeer would be more difficult to correct with traction control.

Has anyone ever used these?

While looking for new bottles, I stumbled across this.

It's a 6oz bottle, that you pump to recharge, and it works like a sprayer on a very small scale. I think this could be very useful for more precision application, or spraying diluted chemicals in small quantities. I'm just posting this because I had not seen this before.

Also... if you were to get a dozen new chemical resistant spray bottles, do you find 16oz, 24oz, or 32oz to be your personal choice of size?

If you have the direct URL, not a "click here", please list that.
