My Website(Again!) 56K Warned!

first impression, it takes awhile to load... but i am @ college and the network here is equal to crap, so thats prob why its slow. ill try it @ home later to see if theres a difference. i love the beginning (entrance page), and it looks very high class, but not overly high tech. the patriotics thoughtout the site are a nice tough. i like the website... did u have to pay to get someone to design it for you, or did you do it yourself?

It's a very slick and flashy website but it's a pain to navigate. Having to scroll to read the sections (i.e., mission statement, detailing choices, etcl.) is time consuming. Give me the info and give it to me now. :D I'd REALLY have to WANT to check out the website. Else, I'd not invest the time to navigate it. I'm also not a fan of sound effects. Unless they truely enhance the experience. I'm not trying to slam the site or you, just my opinion.

Nice site Jimmy! Very Impressive. Very professional looking.

Are you happy with it now or are you still tweaking it?

:)

very nice site. first impression is that it is very intense for people wh are still unlucky enough to have a dial up connection. Aside from that a very well laid out site. Did happen to run into a typo on the "complete new look details pkg" page. the word leather in the 5th bullet.

you missed spelled leather on your "complete detailing packages". It's the second one over the one with the pic of the water on the hood.

Sorry I'm not being picky. I just seen it.

Honestly, one of the best small business websites I've ever seen! Easy navigation without loading a page. Great looking and easy navigation.

Looks good, but doesn't work with the most recent Firefox, so I'd see if you could somehow implement that into your website. Internet explorer makes quick work of it though. :)

PS.... It took 10 seconds to load with a T1 line!!!!!

I have to agree with PAW. And its slow to load. But whoever created it is an great designer, they just need to tone it down a bit.

Jimmy--

First of all, I think it's incredible that you got jimmybuffit.com--what a score! You should see if there are people who will pay for click through ads in your links (aka "Radio Margaritaville") area. I would think there would be a lot of fan traffic through your site and maybe online music vendors, Margaritaville and Cheeseburger-in-Paradise restaurants, and even other fan sites might like the exposure.

Besides that, I agree with some of the comments about the first page loading a little slow. I would at least move the countdown bar to the center of the screen where people will notice it, instead of wondering why there's just a blank screen there.

On the home page, I would also suggest pictures or text in the click on boxes at the bottom of the page. Scroll-overs are cool, but until you point at 'em you have no idea why those boxes are there.

As for the copy, here's what I noticed:

1. Under Full Service Detail>Engine Cleaning: You mention "all parts dressed with water-based dressing." I would just add a few words to explain why (i.e. "to avoid any dangers presented by the heat of the engine"). Adding that also clarifies that you are talking only about dressings used in the engine bay and not that you might use less-durable dressings on exterior trim.

2. Under Full Service Detail>Wheel wells, wheels, and tires: I would suggest adding a brief description of what's done and what types of products may be used. It just seems that you are very descriptive elsewhere, but skipped this area. I think people would be as interested to know that you can get baked on brake dust off as that you don't use steam pressure on the engine.

3. Under Full Service Detail>Interior: You state "guaranteed odor free." That seems like an invitation to complainers. There is always going to be some kind of smell, whether from an air-freshener you use or another product such as the trim dressing or leather conditioner. I would simply use the adjective '"absolutely" instead of "guaranteed," and maybe specify that you are solely referring to the carpet or upholstery fibers themselves.

4. Under Full Service Detail>Exterior: I think that your reference to using "aggressive" compound might seem scary to some people--especially those who may believe that compounds are hazardous to clear coat paint jobs. I would substitute "professional-grade" or "highest-quality," instead, and put the word "polishes" before "compounds." This will also tie back when they later read your warnings to observe other shops' stock of "consumer-grade" products like Turtle Wax.

I also observed your statement about the sealant, and was wondering what sealant you are using and where the "three times longer than carnauba" claim came from. I'm not doubting anything, just wondering.

Also, I realize you are trying to play to your strengths, but I was a little surprised to see the absolutely dismissive attitude of your thoughts on mobile detailers. Especially knowing the quality of work done by some mobile guys on this board. I'm not a pro, so I take no offense, but I just found it funny.

All in all, great site. Congrats on it, and I hope it brings you a lot of business.

Just a quick note, Thanks to everyone for your input!

I'llrespond in some detail later, but

Regarding mobile detailers: The statement is germain/relative to my specific market, and I firmly believe it is well founded. There are not ANY 'sophisticated' mobile guys locally. I wish I knew of one or two (PM me!) that I could refer work to.

I had a brief exchange with Scottwax (whom I've met and respect) on this same topic... If I knew of guyslocally like Scott and Anthony, and so many others, I wouldn't be so harsh...

Maybe it is the climate here, but... there are very successful mobile operators in other 'inclement' states for sure, so I don't know the answer...

I also have more than a few 'hacks' around, with fixed locations.

I guess I see it this way: Even though the site is on the worldwide web, I'm really focusing on just a 10-15 mile radius of my location...

Again, thanks for everyone's input! I really have a great respect for the onsite pros in our community!

More later...

Jim

I love the site Jim. Very cool looking.

One very small comment: The photo that shows you on the phone could be a little higher resolution...the rest of the photos are superb!

Very cool use of current web technology.

It loads like a snail despite my cable connection.

The flag and eagle is kind of cheesy, especially when you are showcasing a Porsche - might as well do a Corvette if you are going for the patriotic, American theme. Regarding the Porsche, why is the image clipped? You don't see the full car.

Also, up top on the page bar, it says "Carme, IN" instead of "Carmel, IN"

Actually, it is a template (one of about 60) which I can change in about 5 minutes... a completely different Flash look, but with same content. Rather neat, but expensive ($25-50 per month, including domain name and hosting).

Check it out here: http://www.getaflashsitenow.com/

Jim

hmm, i've already got a domain and a host.

I'm thinking about using dreamweaver to set mine up. If that doesn't work out, I may have to switch to what you are using :)

Umm...not trying to be critical here....but it's not such an incredible "score", the musician spells his name Buffet, not Buffit. It's a great play on words, congrats are in order for that, but it's because the name is spelled differently that the domain was available, although I'm sure a lot of surfers spell it wrong.

Aha. I didn't realize that. I agree, it's still a great play on words and there probably are some people who misspell it when searching.

Site looks and works great, but it could use a few small tweaks. For one, some of the pics are sort of grainy and pixelated and don't really match the polish of the rest of the site. Other than that, i think it looks great.
