My pad cleaning regimen: PICS

Great post I just tried the washer just yesterday before this I was soaking them in a bucket . The washing machine is much easer, the only thing I did different was let the pads soak for about 1 hr on the soak setting, then washed them and added vinegar in the place the fabric softner goes the pads come out like brand new and smell great! thanks for the tip on using washing machine...:thanks

great write up, I just put all my pads in the washing machine and now I'm fluff drying them in the dryer with no heat.

Some guys steam them, blast them with a air compressor but I just stick em in the machine on warm but gentle wash
Some laundry liquid and slap the edge, sonus and 3M pads in there, do a double rinse, this time on cold setting, wait 30 mins and allow to dry in the laundry

Works a treat, no velcro damage after dozens and dozens of washes and even the ink on the back of the edge's is the same as when I bought them

I wish I could buy some american household cleaning products downunder

Hmmm soooo tempted - my washing machine was a grand though...if I break it I will be soooooooooooo dead. (still being blamed for splotches on clothes because I wash my MF's in there)...

:lmfao

Does your significant other use fabric softner dryer sheets? If so, they can cause splotches too. So turn the blame around! It's not your fault!

Seriously, I've NEVER had an issue with my clothes and I'm a neat freak. If need be, you can always run an empty load with some APC or Charlies Soap to clean out potential residue.

But, with a porcelin lined tub, I've had no residue as everything wicks off in the spin cycle. The tub is basically dry and clean after each wash.

Sorry to hear about your banishment from the washing machine :(

Thanks for the write-up.

Would oxiclean and liquid free tide be enough to clean pads in a washing machine? My new PC should be arriving tomorrow, and I have been wondering about cleaning my pads. What are some other things ppl use to clean their pads?

Thanks

I am not a fan of OxiClean for anything. It is a bleaching agent. You should be more concerned with using the appropriate product that can properly emulsify the polish/glaze/wax/sealant residue lodged in the foam of the pad.

I find that the right amount Simple Green or any APC aids the laundry detergent to do just that - emulsify. If you think about it, you use an APC to degrease and engine, clean tires and get rid of all sorts of gunk. When properly dilluted in the washing machine, it will do just that on your pads without harming them.

Furthermore, I do not like to use anything granual like OxyClean or powder detergents for fear of clumping and lodging in the pad.

The Tide Free is fine as well as Simple Green as you can see from the pics. But, I have switched to Charlie's Laundry Soap because I feel it is more economical, rinses cleaner and is more effective. I have also switched to Charlie's APC too.

But you can use Tide Free. I just like Charlie's better.

Please note, I really only use Lake Country pads and have not had an issue in the machine with the velcro backing. I've had no issues with the few Propel, SM Arnold and Sonus pads I own. However, I have heard of issues with Meguiar's pads particularly the finishing pad. But others claim to have no problems. If your backing ever comes off or loose enough, 3M makes a spray adhesive for foam that can withstand heat and pressure.

Oh thats just **** My wife always washes my MF's and we have never had a problem with that. You would have to have been working with some really harsh stuff.

Thanks for the help Spilchy. I dunno if I can find this Charlies soap or APC in Canada, but I will look for it. I will be washing propel and LC pads, so I should be ok. If I cant find Charlies, then it will be tide and simplegreen I guess. Thanks for all of the info. :thanks

I wouldn't do it. I messed up two of the Edge 2000 Rotary pads by putting them in the washing machine. From my experience, only the Lake Country Pads survive a wash cycle.

Damn, that sucks...well I'm glad that I read this before I threw my Edge pads in the washing machine.

1- This is an old thread
2- It's Sunday night and the forums are slow on the weekends
3- Be patient

Sure this is a great site but bringing up 4-5 old threads and asking questions in each and wanting immediate response isn't going to happen (especially on a weekend).

Anyways back to the topic... The prolonged exposure to water may separate the pads because the glue holding the pads together may fail.
