My Notifications are barely working.

I'm not receiving notifications about people replying to threads I've started or not started. When I go into my notifications and subscriptions I have to manually subscribe to them. But then when I come back it has unsubscribed. Anyone know the secret to setting these notifications so I am notified properly? lol
