My first time with Midnight Sun ----

I had a severely swirled/scratched 2000 BMW M5 Jet Black to do this past weekend, and I tried the new Midnight Sun Batch 24 over 2 coats of Blackfire Wed Diamond that had over 24 hours of curing time before the Midnight Sun was applied.
Maybe its because I have not used a carnauba wax in years, dont know, but it seemed hard to use this wax even in warm temps. It didnt glide on very easy, came off ok, I didnt let it dry, per the directions, wiped it off with microfiber towels,
I guess it helped clarify the paint a little more, but I didnt like the fact that it took off the smooth finish of the Wet Diamond, and left a somewhat sticky surface.
Is this how it is supposed to be? Did I do something wrong ?

Prep was, wash, clay, paint correct with L/C Orange Flat Pad and Meguiars 105, that finished down to perfectly smooth and clear. I tried a follow up with a White L/C pad and Meguiars 205 but it didnt really make it better.

Used a Makita 9227 rotary for entire job.

Hey Dan, thanks for your post and I'm sorry your results where not as positive as you (and obviously us) would like them to be...

You mention you did a rotary for the entire job, but I'm not sure if you applied the wax or sealant with a rotary as well (or just polished the paint).

Blackfire Midnight Sun is best served over a clean cool surface and is designed to work perfectly over the sealant. It is really best applied by hand. Give that the sealant had 24 hours to cure, we can eliminate this as a cause of the problem.

We have not had any reports (to my knowledge) nor have I ever experienced the problem you are having, so I apologize for not knowing exactly what the problem is.

Since we can eliminate surface prep as an issue, that leaves us with application technique and the product itself.

Application technique- Blackfire Midnight Sun should be applied thinly and shouldn't be left to dry. Because it has a very high carnauba content it should be wiped off wet, otherwise it may become more difficult to remove. Using too much product could also make the product difficult to remove, as the carriers flash off (during application) you could be left with a lot of actual carnauba on the paint. The problem with excess carnauba is that it is like removing crayon from your car. It kinda wants to just stay put...

I should note that I have applied Midnight Sun very thickly and let it dry completely and never experienced these problems and am only covering what could happen.

For application I like to use a foam applicator and place it the wax. I give it a bout a 1/4 turn to the prime the pad with wax, then apply using steady pressure (not hard, not even medium, but enough to make sure the pad is pressed evenly to the paint). I like to work it into tight overlapping circles over an area, working the wax into the paint. It should spread evenly and develop almost an transparent oil like appearance on the paint. Then I wipe off immediately with a microfiber towel.

It really works best if you work into the paint slightly to ensure a very uniform, very thin transparent coating. That's how I usually do it, but again the blackfire was designed to be easy to use and not use.

So it might be a problem with the product itself. Midnight Sun is poured in small batches to exacting standards so it is very rare that a bad can ever gets made, let alone released. However it could very well be the case here. I would personally try applying one more time (perhaps using my technique) to a small section of the hood, work it in and remove. If that doesn't do it for you, it is probably a problem with the wax itself. In this case give Jack a call.

Sorry!

Thanks for the reply -

I am sorry I didnt clarify better. I used the Makita for the paint correction only, spread the Wet Diamond and the Midnight Sun by hand. It was down in the low 60's that morning, so it might have had some affect on the product drying quickly then.

I just love how the Wet Diamond leaves the surface clear and very smooth, and don't want to lose that if possible. I have let the hood dry since yesterday morning, so it has had 24 hours, and it spent a few hours in the sun yesterday as well, when I had the M5 out to give it a once over before it goes back tomorrow.

I will try this on my new vehicle after I get over the Carpal Tunnel Surgery I am getting tomorrow morning on my right hand, and see how it works and let you know then, if it might be the batch or just "user error" :)

Thanks for coming back so quickly to me about this, you guys are the BEST !!!

Dan sorry to hear about the surgery, I hope it goes well and improves your quality of life. I have had problems with my right arm because of polishing, so I feel your paint; but only partly.

See if it is application error, which I do doubt, because it should be very easy to use in most conditions. If it is a problem with the product, then we have your back 100%.

As far as loosing some of that slick feeling, you will... But just a little bit. It is isn't being removed as much as it is being covered up, but that is a little of trade off. Wax will not make your paint super slick, so if a wax is doing this to the car, then it isn't just a wax.

That said, I find it to be a small drop, but it does let you know that the wax is staying behind and doing its job, as opposed to wiping off.

Best of luck with the surgery and keep us in the loop with your recovery!

Wow, man, thanks again for the quick reply and advice !

I understand better, and will wait and see when I get back to speed how the Wet Diamond and Midnight Sun work on a 2009 Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat paint of my '09 Jeep Cherokee Limited with Hemi. power, and let you know what I find.
Thanks for concern over the surgery - when I think of how many million times I typed on keyboards in my 45+ year career in Telecommunications, and at the same time used every kind of power tool including 6' long chainsaw bars, to cut huge trees, etc., etc., I am very fortunate to go this long before I find I need to fix the tunnel in there. Its supposed to be outpatient treatment, you just have to have someone drive you home. In about a week, post op to remove stitches, and hope to be back at it soonest.
To be able to sleep at night and not be woken up constantly by intense throbbing and the feeling that very hot liquid is being poured into your veins in your hand, is worth any surgical treatment they can give me... :)

I still love the Blackfire products, and depending how my new business takes off after I get out of surgery, I may want to talk to you guys further about some stuff, ok ??

Best,
Dan F.
