moving across country.. sell or keep car?

I'll be moving out to the west coast later this year and I have a dilemma: Do i keep my car and ship it out (checked some prices... $800-900 CAD + tax) or do I sell it here and try to find something when I get out west?

i don't mind driving out, it's just that i'm going to be heading out in the winter and crossing the rockies in winter is a bit daunting.

I drove from San Francisco to St. Louis nonstop co-driving with my dad. It was one of those deals where we kept saying "we can go just a little bit further." By the time we pulled in the driveway and called my wife at work to tell her we were home we were ZOMBIES. And she wouldn't believe we were home until she came to the house to witness it!

PS: I'll never do it again!:D

Keep the car, tour the States, UNLIKE I DID, and make an adventure of it. :)

Is the car special to you? Is it in good shape with decent mileage? Have you had it long enough to know everything wrong and right about it? These are the question you should be asking yourself. Chances are you will take a hit in selling the car (there are exceptions of course) and the chances of replacing it with an identical car for the price you got rid of it are not great. So factor that in when deciding about price. Now if you hate the car and want something different anyway this may be the time to do something.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, keep the car and make it an adventure. I spent two summers in high school traveling the western states of US with a group of kids and adults in two vans and camping at various locations. I saw so much more of the US that summer than most people see in their life. Take time and make it an adventure. See things like the Bad Lands, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier National park, parts of the Oregon trail, etc.

it's nothing special. the only thing that i don't like about it is that with all the engine mods i've done it still has ~120 hp :(

If I sell it i'd be looking for a late model VW Corrado VR6 :D

As I said before, I wouldn't mind making it into a road trip but it's the fact that I'm going to be driving out across Canada and the rockies in the middle of winter. I have good snow tires, but i think even snow tires are no match for bad weather in the rockies.

PS, i'm not in the US ;)
