Modded E55 AMG, Focus, 330i, Main Event: '95 Corrado (yep). Too many pics.

Sorry 56k'ers. :sign

I'll start with the main event since it's the most fun. 1995 VW Corrado, it's got ~150k on the clock and has been stored for something like 6 years. The owner is finally resurrecting it and I got the call to get it back in shape. Condition was poor; heavy swirling, lots of deep marring, tons of oxidation, and worst of all waterspots from hell. I seriously don't know what was up with these water spots.

Process:

Clay clay clay, all day long, clay clay clay while I sing this song.

EC/OP yellow @1500

4" yellow spot pads via PC w/ Heavy Cut

106FF grey @ 1300

Prime Strong (to clean up some of the remaining spots, and as a base sealant)

Acrylic Jett

Lots of trim restore

Some thoughts: This VW paint was really nice to polish. It finished down so smooth it was really incredible. It seemed pretty hard, but polished out well. Some of the deeper marring I didn't think would come out did, and the swirls were all but eliminated entirely. The only remaining issue with this car is there are some etched water spots on the roof that just are not coming out. They were seriously nutty.

Pics:

(oh one more thing, yes there is some rust on the gas cap and on the lower rocker; owner is having those addressed shorty)

Mercedes E55 AMG; the owner makes/sells exhausts and other various mods for the car, so it's rather done up. IIRC he said ~550hp to the wheels, exhaust sounds like a jet; interior was sinfully deliscious. I'd buy one of these if I had the cash. :) Condition was ok, moderate swirling.

I took some befores but with the weather they didn't look like anything, so eh. It actually rained lightly for the first half of this detail. Bleh.

Ford Focus! This car was pretty fun actually, because the condition was absolutely appalingly hideously terrible. The deep random marring on it was like "huh? what?". Seriously, check out the third pic... multiply by entire car. Pics are lame because in September Canada seems to want to turn into the land of rain and wind.

2006 BMW 330i. I was excited to do this car because it looks like the one I ordered...well, sort of. I guess. Shut up!

Condition was ok. Main issue was overspray; the owner had the rear bumper re-painted after a fender bender. Oddly he went to a shop I typically recommend; but they did a real amatuerish job on this one. Going to have to re-evaluate recommending them. Overspray was pretty much everywhere, including the roof (***?). Swirls were light.

Word.

Gosh, not much to say but the usual big UP! :2thumbs:

Those E's are drop dead georgous..

Keep on going while we still can! :sadpace:

Beautiful as always!! Love looking forward to opening your threads because of your detailing skills and great photography capturing the story of each detail! Keep it up!

What, am I the only one who thinks the full-sun shots of the Corrado are better than Viagra? :2thumbs:

Had to tone that one down a bit. Didn't want to say it was, um... bananer-inducing. :getdown

Seriously sweet details, all of them!

I agree! The Corrado has a special place with me because it was such a huge turnaround and I learned to drive in a car just like it. Interestingly when I was moving it around for pics I got more comments on it from passer-bys than I have on some of the exotics I've done. People like Corrado's!

Cheers.

Picus- Yeah, nice work. The VW looks great in that color, glad to hear the owner is gonna get it all fixed up.

How do you decide between H-T EC and HC? I'm a little suprised you don't just reach for the EC each time..do you find the two products to be *that* different?

Yes, very much so actually. Now that I have used them more they definitely have different characteristics. EC has more bite, that goes without saying - I find it's harder to work which is why you add OP (or another polish) to it. I also find that while it finishes down nicely there is a significant difference between the finish of it and HC. With EC you definitely can't jump straight to LSP, with HC you could. HC is also much easier to work in general. I actually prefer HC, and use it whenever possible, but obviously in some cases you need the cut of EC.

On both the E55 and 330i I *could* have skipped 106ff; heavy cut on a light cut pad finishes down better than any "heavy" compound I've used.

Another note is that via PC I find EC to be almost useless (just imo) because HC has as much cut via PC and finishes down way better, AND is easier to use. I was just remarking to someone else that via PC I pretty much don't use anything but HC anymore. My Menz PG, IP, OHC, OC, and OP are all languishing.

All of this is just my experience of course. To give you an idea I bought 32oz bottles of EC and HC to try them, the EC is about 3/4 full and the HC is maybe 1/8th full now.
